Demo Time l Let’s conduct a demo of the Human/Human version of the Turing Test 1
2
Debrief l Was that easy or hard? l What things made it seem like the answer was “obvious” l What things were much harder than you anticipated 2
3
Debrief l How do you think the Human/Human version of this would compare with the Computer/Human version? 3
4
4 Is the Turing Test a Good One? l What kinds of behavior are intelligent? l How well does the Turing Test evaluate these behaviors? l Does the Turing Test introduce any problems of its own?
5
5 Is the Turing Test a Good One? l What kinds of behavior are intelligent? nTuring's game makes some assumptions about what counts as intelligent. nWhat about abilities such as leadership or collaboration?
6
6 Is the Turing Test a Good One? l How well does the Turing Test evaluate these behaviors? nIt tests the judge (perhaps more than) the machine? –Special Knowledge –Willingness to believe (ELIZA)
7
7 Is the Turing Test a Good One? l Does the Turing Test introduce any problems of its own? nSome folks claim that Turing's game emphasizes a behavior that we do not consider essential to intelligence, such as ones that do no more than fool the interrogator. The Turing Test promotes the development of artificial con artists, not artificial intelligences –Consider a human like calculator… –Stories from the Loebner Prize. nThe boundaries of perceived human/machine capabilities constantly change.
8
8 Your opinions… ? l Which of the objections that Turing anticipates against his parlor game is the weakest? l Which of the objections that Turing anticipates against his parlor game is the strongest?
9
Don’t forget your research paper… l By now you should have read the Research Paper Specification : l RP1a is due Friday nRead the paper I have posted nWrite a 2-4 page (600-1200 word) response –Summarize - What is this paper about? –Analyze - What do the authors do well? –Analyze - What do the authors do poorly? –Analyze - What question did the author's leave unanswered? –Reflect - What did you learn about the topic they were discussing? –Reflect - What did you learn about writing a short/concise paper?
