What Does the Resurrection Mean?
3
Review In previous lessons Looked at evidence of Christ's life, death and resurrection Evidence from external sources, internal testimony, logical reasoning, and fulfillment of prophecy But what does the resurrection mean for us? Or what can we learn because of the resurrection?
4
Death has been conquered Although several people in NT and OT were brought back to life, they all died again Although 2 people (Enoch and Elijah) never died, they bypassed death, not conquering it 1 Cor 15:20-23 Christ's resurrection means all have the opportunity to be victorious over death 1 Cor 15:50-57 Not in this body, but in an immortal one Which gives us hope for eternal life (1 Pet 1:3-4)
5
Death has been conquered Which means there will be a resurrection for ALL and a judgment (Acts 17:30-31) Which means we can be saved from sins and live a new life in Christ (Rom 6:3-11; 1 Pet 3:21-22) Which means we should be steadfast and immovable in our labors for the Lord (1 Cor 15:58) Because our work is not in vain
6
Jesus' Claims were True Jn 8:58-59 Jesus claimed to be the I AM, God Himself (Ex 3:14) Same claim made by accepting worship Mt 8:2; 9:18; 14:33; and 28:9, 17 Same claim made by saying He deserved/had the same honor and glory as the Father Jn 5:23 Jn 17:1-5; Isa 48:11 Same claim made by Thomas and not corrected by Jesus (Jn 20:28) Rom 1:3-4 deity confirmed by His resurrection Belief in His deity essential for salvation (Jn 8:24)
7
What do you think? Mt 22:41-46 The last week of His earthly life They saw most of the evidence of Who Jesus was Not yet seen the resurrection Asked them to evaluate their knowledge of Christ They understood his earthly lineage Did not understand how Christ could be greater than David Because the only explanation was the one Jesus offered, that Christ was God Do you believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God?
8
What do you think? Mt 27:63-64 The other option is that He was a deceiver Either intentionally (liar) or unintentionally (lunatic) Yet even the Jews understood proof of the resurrection would eliminate this possibility
9
Conclusion 1 Jn 5:10 Jesus claimed to be the Son of God His resurrection proved His claim To deny the evidence is to call Him a liar His resurrection means eternal life is available to you Death has been conquered What does His resurrection mean to you?
