2 What is kaolin? Kaolinite is a clay mineral formed 50 to 100 million years ago. Rocks that have a lot of kaolinite are known as kaolin, china clay or white gold. Good kaolin is very white, soft, and made up of crystal plates that are usually stacked together.

3 Where was kaolin first discovered? Kaolin was first discovered in southeast China. Its name comes from the town Kao-Ling, which means “high ridge.” Then it was discovered in Cornwall, England and in Middle Georgia. There are kaolin deposits all over the world.

4 Where is kaolin found in Georgia? Kaolin in Georgia is found along the Fall Line, which runs from Augusta to Columbus. 13 counties in middle Georgia: Glascock, Jefferson, Richmond, Twiggs, Warren, Washington, Wilkinson, McDuffie, Hancock, Baldwin, Houston, Macon, Sumter

5 How is kaolin mined? The kaolin is dug out of the ground or mixed with water and is sent by road or pipe line to local processing plants. BASF, IMERYS, KaMin, and Thiele have plants that mix and purify the kaolin before it’s sold and shipped to customers.

6 What is Kaolin used for? It’s used in making Ceramics Paper/Packaging Paint Plastics Rubber Cosmetics/ Personal Hygiene Products

7 Ceramics It’s in the sink we use to wash our hands. It’s in our dishes and our toys.

8 Paper/Packaging It’s in cardboard boxes for our snacks, food and tissues. It’s in newspapers, magazines and books we read every day.

9 Paint It’s in paint we use in art class. It’s in paint you use to paint your house.

10 Plastics It’s in the food containers and bottles we use. It’s in our playground slides.

11 Rubber It’s in the boots we wear when it rains. It’s in the tires on our school bus.

12 Cosmetics/Personal Hygiene Products It’s in the makeup that we wear.

13 Facts about Kaolin Millions of tons of kaolin are mined in Georgia each year. Georgia leads the world in kaolin mining, production, processing and application of kaolin products. Each October, we celebrate our kaolin heritage during a week-long celebration known as the International Kaolin Festival. Sandersville is known as “The Kaolin Capital of the World”
