Please feel free to chat amongst yourselves until we begin at the top of the hour.

Seminar Agenda A few notes An experiment in adaptation! Language & Adaptation Adaptation & Natural Selection Unit 6 Project Review Questions & Answers

A few notes…. We are more than half way through the course! There are just 2 more projects due in this course: Unit 6 Project (150 points) Unit 9 Project – Final Project (250 points) Worth a combined 40% of your final grade!

Any questions?

An Experiment in Adaptation! Have a chat! We’ll start with the weather… but do NOT vowels in anything that you type: a e i o u Any words that contain vowels will be ignored.

Language & Adaptation In your new, vowel – free environment, what adaptations to language did you and your classmates make?

Language & Adaptation What things were more difficult to talk about, and why?

Language & Adaptation If you were to live in a ‘u’ and ‘o’-free environment, what other letters might struggle and die out?

Language & Adaptation Can you think of any current tools/ technologies that are causing our language to change?

Adaptation & Natural Selection

Adaptation: modification of an organism or its parts that makes it more fit for existence under the conditions of its environment Natural Selection: a natural process that results in the survival and reproductive success of individuals or groups best adjusted to their environment and that leads to the perpetuation of genetic qualities best suited to that particular environment

Adaptation & Natural Selection Now, think about squirrels. What might happen to them if all the oak trees (and acorns) died out?

How Do Squirrels Climb? Ankle joints that are adapted to be super flexible When a squirrel wants to climb down it can rotate its feet 180 degrees, dig its claws into the trunk and hang from its back legs.

Adaptation & Natural Selection What if ALL TREES went extinct? What adaptations might they have to make to adjust to the acorn and nut free world?

Adaptation & Natural Selection How might these changes affect their body structures?

Adaptations Food source: teeth, jaws Tails: balance Muscles Shelter Migration? Fur Claws

Adaptation & Natural Selection After 50,000 years of living in an tree- free world, how might squirrels look?

Adaptation & Natural Selection Why does this kind of evolutionary change take so long?

Peppered Moth Today, in some areas, 90% or more of the-peppered moths are dark in color. More than 70 species of moth in England have undergone a change from light to dark. Similar observations have been made in other industrial nations, including the United States. (Biology Corner, n.d.)

Any questions?

Unit 6 Project Review Answer the following in a 1,000 word paper: List all of the components of two of your meals (breakfast, lunch or dinner). List each component’s country / state of origin. List where you purchased the products from. Consider the chain of events that took the product to get from the farm/laboratory to your table. What are some of the benefits of a global market and why? List at least 2 benefits, weighing any short-term and long-term impacts. What are some of the impacts of this global market and why? Considering both short-term and long-term impacts, provide at least 2 negative impacts. Consider the phrase “Think Globally, Act Locally.” What does it mean to you? Has your research on the global market changed the way you will choose goods in the future? Why or why not?

Unit 6 Project Review 1000 word minimum requirement Use APA formatting Due Tuesday Research is required! Cite any resources that are used in your project No more than 10% of the paper should be quoted material Be sure to provide all of the information / answer all questions required in the assignment! Make a connection between each question Review the grading rubric in the syllabus
