8 Advanced career Only 7 per cent of people attend independent schools, yet they account for over half of FTSE 100 CEOs Opportunity to progress 40% of our directors started at the most junior levels of Tesco. Our UK Chief Executive Chris Bush left school at 16 and began his career at Tesco on the shop floor. Mid career The UK still has a lower skills base than many other countries, with nearly 5 million people of working age without a qualification. Development programmes We offer our colleagues training to get on at every stage of their career, such as our Foundation Retail Degree in partnership with Manchester Metropolitan University. Last year 12,000 of our colleagues took part in one of our formal development programmes. Early career and higher education More than a million young people are not in education, employment or training in England Entry programmes We employ 76,000 young people in our UK business. We have a range of entry programmes to suit different qualifications and interests, including 21 different graduate programmes and our trainee management programme for A-level finishers. Beyond secondary Only 32% of young people in the UK choose a vocational education route, compared to 50% in Europe. Countries with effective vocational education and dual learning systems have some of the lowest youth unemployment rates. Apprenticeships Since 2001 we have offered 7,000 apprenticeships, and have committed to provide 10,000 places in the two years to 2014 alone. Primary school 25% of children from poor backgrounds fail to meet expected educational standards by the end of primary school Tesco for Schools Since 1994, our Tesco for Schools scheme has donated £200 million worth of vital learning equipment to schools. Early Intervention Pilot Tesco is supporting a project in the Wirral led by Frank Field to identify the most effective early interventions to promote a child’s life chances. Secondary school 44% of young people don’t feel well informed about their career options School Outreach Tesco has piloted a school outreach programme to inspire young people about the diverse career opportunities available in the retail sector, and give them an insight into the world of work. We are looking to roll this out nationwide. Retirement By 2050 22.9% of the population is projected to be aged 65 and over. Flexible retirement We employ 71,000 people over the age of 50 and 6,000 over 65. We believe in lifelong learning and our oldest apprentice was 71.
