EMHI SUBSYSTEM Electro-Hechanical Head Interface MSD P14551- Multiprocess 3-D Printer

Project Background Team tasked with creating a low cost, open-source multi- process CNC machine. Project is at stage 1, team is expected to create a working proof of concept to demo, with extensive expandability for future MSD teams. Project inspired by the Multi-Proto Lab http://rapidprototypingmachine.com/

Electro-Mechanical Head Interface (EMHI) Has the highest Technical and Project Risk score out of all subsystems. Connects various “process heads” to the motion control system of the machine. X-Y, Rotational, registration handled by ball bearing/dowel pin arrangement. Z currently handled by pinning a shaft with an air cylinder. Electrical Connection established using a pogo pin array.

EMHI Issues Z registration method seems unreliable if there is misalignment of shaft, doesn’t force Z to a datum surface. Pogo Pins may generate too much heat if transferring power to process heads. Airline must be run through the motion system.

Feedback Sought Suggestions for different means of Z registration. Improvements to current design.

Current EMHI Design Motion System SideProcess Head Side Air Cylinder

Current EMHI Design Motion and Process Head Sides Mated

Current EMHI Design Placement in overall system concept

Other Possible Methods Collet system

Other Possible Methods Locking Cam System

Other Possible Methods Vertical Tapered Slider

Thanks for the help!
