The 2006 Duke University Lacrosse Case: Three white males part of the Duke lacrosse team were falsely accused of raping an African American stripper at a party held at the team captains house on March 13, 2006.

Agency that was Involved?: Prosecutor Mike Nifong

Case they messed up?: On April 11, 2007, North Carolina Attorney General Roy Cooper dropped all charges and declared the three players innocent. Cooper stated that the charged players – Reade Seligmann, Collin Finnerty, and David Evans – were victims of a "tragic rush to accuse”

How they messed up?: Nifong was disbarred for "dishonesty, fraud, deceit and misrepresentation," making Nifong the first prosecutor in North Carolina history to lose his law license based on actions in a case.

Who was affected?: The case changed the lives of the three young men and their families and deeply affected the broader Duke community, which found itself in the spotlight with major stories in The New York Times, Newsweek, The New Yorker, Rolling Stone, Sports Illustrated and thousands of other outlets. Five segments on “60 Minutes” were devoted to the case, as were extensive commentaries on blogs and tabloid television shows.

What was their punishment?: Nifong was found guilty of criminal contempt and served one day in jail.
