2. September 2015 LCCU Meeting History of Adobe Flash Flash is a software platform that has run video, animation, and games in web pages since 1996. It can directly access computer memory. It uses a lot of computer resources, can bog systems down. Apple stopped installing it in 2010, stating that it was the main reason Macs crash. Android stopped in 2012. Most websites have switched over to HTML 5. It’s the default on YouTube and Vimeo.

Security vulnerabilities turn up on an almost daily basis. In July 2015, Adobe put out security alerts and fixes for 38 vulnerabilities in Flash Player. Hacking Team used vulnerabilities in Flash to create spyware that can take control of a computer, & sold it to oppressive governments. Firefox & Chrome disabled Flash until a fix was issued.

4. September 2015 LCCU Meeting Controlling Adobe Flash Internet Explorer: –To disable it, click the gear, Internet Options. Under the Programs tab, click Manage add-ons. Under Show: select “All Add-ons”. Click Shockwave Flash Object and in the lower right-hand corner, click Disable.

In the left- hand column, click Plugins. Click Disable. –To pause it, click hamburger icon, Settings, “Show advanced settings”. Under Privacy click Content Settings button. Under Plugins choose “Let me choose when to run …”. –Or add a plugin called Flash Control, which lets you decide, case by case.
