3. Contracting Gonorrhea Spread through contact with penis, vagina, mouth, and anus –Ejaculation does not need to occur –Mother to baby through delivery Anyone sexually active can contract gonorrhea Can get infected again

4. Signs and Symptoms No signs or symptoms at all Can appear 2-5 days after infection; can take 30 days to appear Can be mistaken as bladder infection Signs may be discharge, anal itching, soreness, bleeding, or painful bowel movements

5. Complications Women - causes PID (pelvic inflammatory disease) –Mild to severe – abdominal pain and fever –Can lead to internal abscesses –Damages fallopian tubes, risk for ectopic pregnancy Men – epididymitis –Painful condition with ducts attached to testicles, can lead to infertility

6. Gonorrhea and Pregnancy Can be transferred to baby when delivered Causes blindness, joint or blood infections Need to let OB/GYN know about condition

7. Treatment Antibiotics are used –Drug-resistant strains of gonorrhea are becoming more common Many with gonorrhea also have chlamydia Medicine does not repair damage done from the disease

8. Prevention Abstinence Be in a long-term mutually monogamous relationship (with uninfected partner) Latex condoms reduce chances Any burning or irritation should be sign to stop having sex

9. Talk With Your Partner! Can be difficult Tell ASAP Can be passed back and forth if not treated
