The 13 Colonies

Events that Lead to the Revolutionary War  Colonists came to the colonies for freedom from King George. In the 1760’s Parliaments new laws and restrictions threatened the colonists freedom.  Parliament – England’s law making group  King George – King of England

Events that Lead to the Revolutionary War Event 1: Proclamation of 1763 British told the colonists that they could not move onto land that was west of the Appalachian Mts. This made the colonists angry that wanted to expand west. King George also put soldiers in this territory to enforce this new law.

Events that Lead to the Revolutionary War Event 2: Quartering Act The soldiers that King George had placed in the colonies to enforce the Proclamation of 1763 needed a place to live, so King George and Parliament passed a law telling the colonists that they had to house (quarter) the soldiers there. This was called the Quartering Act of 1765. The colonists were afraid that the soldiers were going to restrict their freedom.

Events that Lead to the Revolutionary War Event 3: Stamp Act of 1765 England was in debt from the French and Indian War. Parliament thought the colonies should help pay part of this debt, so they taxed the colonies. Parliament passed a tax that said anything paper should have a stamp on it. The stamp on the paper proved the tax was paid. The colonists were angry because they had no say in this new tax. French and Indian War: War between the French & British Taxation without Representation: When a group of people are taxed without consent/vote.

Events that Lead to the Revolutionary War Event 4: Townshend Act Parliament passed this law that stated there would be a tax on glass, lead, tea and paper.

Events that Lead to the Revolutionary War Event 5: Boston Massacre Colonists started to protest British troops being in the colonies. In Boston tension between the British and the colonists exploded into violence – this was known as the Boston Massacre.

Events that Lead to the Revolutionary War Event 6: Boston Tea Party In protest to the various taxes British Parliament had put on the colonists – some colonists boarded British ships carrying cargos of tea and dumped all the tea into the sea. This caused the British to lose out on the money that they could have made from the tea.

Events that Lead to the Revolutionary War Event 7: Intolerable Acts of 1774 King George was infuriated (very angry) with the acts of the colonists, so he imposed a variety of laws to help better control the colonists – they were called the intolerable acts – these were put into place to punish the colonists.

Events that Lead to the Revolutionary War Event 8: First Continental Congress The colonists wanted to fight back. In 1774, 12 of the 13 colonies met to make a list of complaints against the British parliament. The list of complaints and requests for change was called the Declaration of Rights. Colonists blocked all trade with England.

Events that Lead to the Revolutionary War Event 9: Lexington and Concord In April 1775 British soldiers marched into Lexington. They ordered militiamen to drop their muskets. A shot was fired – nobody knows who fired this shot. The British advanced to Concord a nearby town. Militiamen – colonists who defended their community Muskets – guns used during this era.
