Paired Reading Presentation of Certificates January 5th 2012

What we think. We found that in class pupils are more settled with a book during silent reading time. The pupils are more selective when choosing books. It has given the children an opportunity to read a range of books from a number of authors – shared their recommendations. Children's confidence in own ability has improved. An improvement in fluency of reading.

Pupil Comments Paired reading was fun and interesting. We learned new words and about new things. Enjoyed reading with and to parents. I am better at reading out loud and more confident. It was a brilliant experience. Didn’t like it – too many instructions. It was OK!
5
Some Points For Consideration. To have more of a choice of books to read. Timing of meetings Have Paired Reading as an addition rather than instead of.
6
Parent Overview Majority believe that children reading more and had a better understanding of what they read. Many noted that children were more confident when reading. Generally agree that children had benefited in some form or other from Paired Reading.
7
Comments From Parents We had a great time doing paired reading. She became more confident. Proper one to one reading time is really good for the kids. The interactive nature and prompt feedback proved a beneficial experience. It gave him confidence to read out loud. We both enjoyed reading a variety of books. She excelled at her reading.

More comments from parents A great programme. She read more than usual. I was surprised she chose novels rather than picture books. She has more confidence now. We enjoyed spending time, talking about the books and exploring different themes. Spending time reading the books together and seeing his reading improve. Found the split meetings better.
9
It’s Not All Perfect! Some days the books were hard. Some days the books were too easy. It was hard getting a book pitched at the right level. The timings of the parent meetings did not suit. Leaving books at home or forgetting to change books.
10
What Now ? “On easy material children practise the skills they have and build up fluency.” Marie Clay.
11
What Now ? Paired reading books have stretched children’s reading. Children still need time to enjoy three types of books: Under the Pillow Books – very familiar/comfort books. A comfortable level book to practise reading. Every so often a book to extend/stretch the child.
