Applying the Metric System METRIC CONVERSIONS, DENSITY, AND DISPLACEMENT
3
Metric Conversions How do we go from one unit to the next?
4
Time to Practice!!

Mass is? The mass of an object is the measurement of the amount of matter (atoms & molecules) in the object. Solids, liquids and gases all have mass. Measure with a balance Measures in grams (g)
6
Volume is? The volume of an object is how much space it take up. Solids, liquids and gases all have volume. Use a graduated cylinder (mL) Use a ruler (cm 3 )
7
DENSITY The amount of matter contained in a space (how much mass a substance has per volume) Equation: Density (D) = Mass (m) Volume (v) OR, you may use the Density Triangle Method
8
Displacement Definition: The volume of space an object moves a liquid Used to determine the volume of an irregular solid You find it by: 1. Find the volume of a liquid (usually water) in a graduated cylinder. 2. Tilt the graduated cylinder to the side and carefully slide the irregular shaped object we are trying to find the volume of in until it hits the bottom. 3. Find the volume of the liquid with the added object of unknown volume 4. SUBTRACT the volume of the water (first measurement) from the volume of water with the object (second measurement) 5. The answer you get is the volume of the object
