4. The Olympic Committee decided in September 1990 that Atlanta would host the 1996 Olympics.

5. To host the Olympics, a state or country must have a minimum of $2.5 billion.

6. The long term benefits of hosting the 1996 Olympics are categorized into three categories.

7. Creation of World Class Facilities Centennial Park is a great example of a world class facility that was built for the Olympics.

8. Centennial Park Approximately 800,000 bricks were used to build the park. The park is 21 acres.

9. Billy Payne thought of it as a central gathering for visitors and fans during the Olympics, and as a lasting legacy for the Olympics. It is located near Georgia landmarks. The Georgia Dome, Phillips Arena, Georgia Aquarium, and World of Coco-Cola are all nearby.

10. A key feature of the park is the “world famous” Fountain of Rings. It also has a statue of Pierre de Coubertin (he was the one who started the modern Olympics).

11. The medal presentations were held in the park. After the bombing security was raised. They had more bag searches and other protective systems. They put the “centennial tree” where the bombing occurred.

12. After the Olympics millions of visitors came each year. They have a huge annual Independence Day concert.

13. Hotel Rooms About 7,500 hotel rooms were built between 1990 and the opening of the Olympic games. This brought the number of hotel rooms in the Atlanta area only to 60,000.

14. Long Term Benefits cont. The federal government also spent millions of dollars on replacing sidewalks, installing pedestrian signs, putting up new lighting, and installing new art.

15. The second long term benefit of hosting the Olympics is international recognition through exclusive media coverage. There were two million people that came to Atlanta for the Olympics.

16. An estimated 3.5 billion people watched at least part of the Olympics. This brought much attention to Atlanta. On top of that they hosted the last Olympics of the 20 th century.

17. The third category is community benefits including local volunteerism, job creation, youth and education programs, economic community development projects, and cultural programs.

18. This gave a lot of job opportunities for people in the surrounding area of Atlanta. There were also many volunteers. This caused the community of Atlanta to come and work together as a city.

19. Short Term Benefits Georgia earned much money. It also boosted the employment rate in Georgia by 17 percent. Georgia also created new goods for visitors that came from out of state.

20. The Economy During the Olympics Before the 1996 Olympics the Georgia Economy was normal, then while the Olympics were going on the economy went sky high.

21. The Economy Rate Increases The economy rate went up from 12% to 38%. The employment rate went up 14 %.

22. Ted Turner 1.Ted Turner came to Atlanta, Georgia in the year 1970 to start media broadcasting stations. He had many local stations," Turner Network Television (TNT)” and “Cable News Network (CNN)”, are just a few of his many television stations.

23. He also made Turner field and owned the Atlanta Braves, Hawks, and the Thrashers. He expanded Atlanta. If it had not been for Ted Turner Atlanta would not have been big enough to hold the 1996 Olympics.

24. Zell Miller The Governor from 1991 to 1999; he was governor for 8 years. Was the Governor during the 1996 Olympics. He was the member of the Democratic party. He helped found the Hope Scholarship

25. Bill Campbell Mayor from 1994 to 2002. He is a Democrat. He was the third African American to hold the office.

26. Although he wasn’t the mayor when the National Olympic Committee decided to let Atlanta hold the Olympics, he did help in the process of fixing the city so that it was representable.

27. Bombing in Centennial Park The person who bombed Centennial Park was Eric Robert Rudolph (was known as the Olympic Park Bomber).

28. Eric Robert Rudolph Only two people died, however one hundred-eleven were wounded (one of the two who died of a heart attack while evacuating the site, and the other died because of the bombing).

29. He spent five years on the FBI`s most wanted list. He was captured in May of 2003 in a small town of Murphy, North Carolina.

30. A police officer arrested him behind a supermarket. A couple of people seen him earlier digging through a trashcan.

31. The bombing of Centennial Park was not the only site he bombed. He said the reason of him setting off the bombs was for a campaign against gay rights and abortion.

32. William Porter “Billy” Payne He was born on October 13, 1947. Mr. Payne was named the CEO of the Atlanta committee for the Olympics. He also attended the University of Georgia. He received his law degree and his Bachelor of Arts. He was appointed into the Georgia Alpha Chapter of Phi Delta Theta Fraternity.

33. Payne first had the idea of Atlanta to host the Olympic games in 1987. He gained support of Atlanta leaders for his effort. After the Olympic Games, he replaced Hootie Johnson on May 5 th, 2006 as chairman of Augusta National Golf Club.
