Course work distribution  2 Essays-40%  Mid semester exam-30%  Final exam-30% TOTAL-100%

Topics for Essays (40%) 1) Write an account of three poems which are linked by mood. These mood might be about love, fear, nature, sleep, or childhood experience. In what different ways do you find the writing conveys the nature of the experience? Note: You may write on any poem from your text, strictly with the exception of ones used for discussion and/or sample essays by the Editors. You are, however, encouraged to write on the core poems listed in the module

Topics for Essays (Cont’d) 2)Using Reader Response Criticism (read details in Kirszner and Mandell) write an essay which concentrates on the attributes of any ONE protagonist in your selected play. Use only one of the following plays* for this essay: William Shakespeare – Hamlet Sophocles – Oedipus Rex/Oedipus the King Tennessee Williams - The Glass Managerie * All these texts are in Kirszner and Mandell edition DUE DATE FOR BOTH ESSAYS: Week 12 (5 th December 2015)

General guidelines for Essay Essay is five to ten pages long (A4), font 12, Times New Roman, double spacing with proper margin and grammatically comprehensible. The essay must have an introduction, body and conclusion. Citation to references must follow the MLA format. The content of your existing module and textbook is useful for the purpose of this assignment but the use of other references is encouraged. Marks will be deducted if the essay does the following: – It exceeds ten pages – It is full of ridiculous grammatical errors. – It does not answer the question as specified. – It reaches the examiner long past the due date.

If you are not sure how to write the essays….  Please refer to Kirszner, L.G. & Mandell, S.R. (eds.). Literature: Reading, Reacting, Writing. 6 th ed. Boston: Thomson. 2007  Chapters: a) Chapter 24 – Reading and Writing about Poetry b) Chapter 38 – Reading and Writing about Drama

The selection of poems will only cover from no.1 to 7 in the list.  Notes from the given slides will also be useful for your mid semester exam
