Student Report: An Effective Process? June 2011

Issues: Does report uphold our core value to ‘Always act in the best interest of the students?’ Does the report system ‘ support ’ as well as ‘ sanction ’ students? Does report ‘ have teeth ’ ? Does report effectively, ‘ manage ’ students out of college? Do subject teachers feel empowered to deal with students? “ Report ” ?

Meet... ‘ Charlotte ’ 5.10 GSCE score / NAG of C 4 AS programme

September: Initial patchy attendance Several course changes - First 1-to-1 flags up that Charlotte chose A-levels because her friends were doing the same Didn ’ t attend Open Evenings

October: Attendance continues to be patchy and work rate, poor Asks to drop down to 3 AS subjects, claiming he finds 1 subject too difficult and says teacher picks on her Same subject teacher sends several concerns about under-performance & ‘ bad ’ attitude Already been sent home 3 times for not wearing her ID / lanyard.

January: 86% attendance; 10% unauthorised Concerns from 2 of 4 subject teachers – 1 is her least liked subject Concerns largely raising non-completion of homework Achieved U in one other mock before Christmas Attends all exams but is found to have phone in her pocket in her General Studies exam. This leads to her being disqualified and given zero by the board

March: Attendance now 81%; unauthorised stays at 10% Out of 3 exams taken, achieves 2 Es and 1 D All 3 teachers send concerns about under-performance Expresses wish to restart or leave college to do BTEC Art at Manchester College

April: Attendance now 76% attendance; unauthorised now 14% Leaves home after fall out with family over suspected cannabis use Stays with various friends and relatives for next 2 weeks No communication with parents during this time Student has missed 2 Directed Study sessions both scheduled at the end of the day

Progression from A1 to A2: Returns home but strained relationship with parents New boyfriend who she ’ s seeing a lot of the time No further plans made and expresses intention to return Returns after study leave Registers with UCAS and begins researching degree courses
