CONSTRUCTION OCT. 9-12, 2007 CONSTRUCTION CONTRACT & STONE COSTS - APPROX. $16,000. TOTAL

Looking US at the constructed bypass channel. We plugged the channel, put all flow in the bypass channel, & worked in the dry during construction. Under construction-Elton Creek DS of Freedom 7 Bridge-derrick-Oct 2007

METHODS EMPLOYED  225 ft of self-adjusting & self-filtering Longitudinal Peaked Stone Toe Protection {LPSTP}. Mix of DOT heavy & medium graded stone. All protection is on right bank  Curved & vegetated keys on US & DS ends, 1 vegged tieback & key in middle of project  A stone check dam at DS end {not enuf stone for an Engineered Rocked Riffle}  Boil-Up Pool with curved kicker (Smile)  Five Single-Stone Bendway Weirs  Many transplanted Streamco Willow shrubs  Live Siltation, Pole Plantings, & Live Staking using Streamco & Black Willows, Red Osier & Silky Dogwoods  6 rooted-stock Red Osier Dogwood

WE WILL START DOWNSTREAM & WORK UPSTREAM, THEN DO THE GRADE CONTROL @ THE DS END LAST.

PROJECT CONSTRUCTED IN 3 WORKING DAYS, OCT 9-12, 2007

19 MONTHS AFTER CONSTRUCTION (1 full growing season & 2 more growing months after completion) Photos by Dave Derrick JUNE 9, 2009

1 growing season and 2 months after completion. Looking downhill @ the Live Siltation (mid-project). 19 MONTHS LATER - Elton Cr. DS of Freedom 7 Br.-Derrick-June. 9, 2009

Looking downhill @ one transplanted willow bush. 19 MONTHS LATER - Elton Cr. DS of Freedom 7 Br.-Derrick-June. 9, 2009

Looking DS at the bank with transplanted shrub and poles acting as a Living Dike (row of vegetation oriented perpendicular to the direction of high flow) 19 MONTHS LATER - Elton Cr. DS of Freedom 7 Br.-Derrick-June. 9, 2009

From top bank, upper end of project. Looking DS at the point bar, channel, LPSTP, & vegetated bank. 19 MONTHS LATER-Elton Cr. DS of Freedom 7 Br.-Derrick-June. 9, 2009

The next 16 pix are from in the channel, working from upstream to downstream.

From US of project, looking DS. Dead water US of Single Stone Rock Vane. 19 MONTHS LATER-Elton Cr. DS of Freedom 7 Br.-Derrick-June. 9, 2009

Looking DS @ LPSTP & upper bend with dead water US & DS of Single Stone Rock Vane. Taller stone protection & heavy veg since this is the “impact zone” of high velocity flow into the project. 19 MONTHS LATER-Elton Cr. DS of Freedom 7 Br.-Derrick-June. 9, 2009

Looking DS at the upper bend. Excellent veg (Live Siltation, 4 large willow bush transplants, & many live dogwood & willow poles) on mid & upper bank. 19 MONTHS LATER-Elton Cr. DS of Freedom 7 Br.-Derrick-June. 9, 2009

Looking DS at a correctly-shaped point bar. Philosophy on this project was to have the outer bank rough & strong & inner bank smooth & adjustable. 19 MONTHS LATER-Elton Cr. DS of Freedom 7 Br.-Derrick-June. 9, 2009

Looking DS at the project. Two deep pools (separated by the Boil-Up pool curved kicker) naturally dissipate stream energy. 19 MONTHS LATER-Elton Cr. DS of Freedom 7 Br.-Derrick-June. 9, 2009 Pool

Looking @ the US deep pool. Branches, leaves, & fine sediment on left bank side of pool. 19 MONTHS LATER-Elton Cr. DS of Freedom 7 Br.-Derrick-June. 9, 2009

Looking DS at the pool & vegetated bank. High flows on the bank will encounter deep-rooted robust veg. 19 MONTHS LATER-Elton Cr. DS of Freedom 7 Br.-Derrick-June. 9, 2009

Looking DS at the second deep pool, LPSTP, & Live Siltation bank veg. DS key veg is visible & robust. 19 MONTHS LATER-Elton Cr. DS of Freedom 7 Br.-Derrick-June. 9, 2009

From point bar looking @ right bank. This is the 50 ft of Live Siltation & two large willow bush transplants that took 45 minutes to install. Fantastic growth!! 19 MONTHS LATER-Elton Cr. DS of Freedom 7 Br.-Derrick-June. 9, 2009

Looking @ a Single Stone Bendway Weir. 19 MONTHS LATER-Elton Cr. DS of Freedom 7 Br.-Derrick-June. 9, 2009

Looking DS at robust Live Siltation & DS key veg at lower end of project. 19 MONTHS LATER-Elton Cr. DS of Freedom 7 Br.-Derrick-June. 9, 2009

Looking US @ two deep pools with the Boil-Up Pool curved kicker in between. Base flow thalweg trace in yellow. 19 MONTHS LATER-Elton Cr. DS of Freedom 7 Br.-Derrick-June. 9, 2009

Looking DS at exit flow over rock check dam. 19 MONTHS LATER-Elton Cr. DS of Freedom 7 Br.-Derrick-June. 9, 2009

Rock check dam at lower end is performing well. 19 MONTHS LATER-Elton Cr. DS of Freedom 7 Br.-Derrick-June. 9, 2009

Small gully on upper bank from overbank drainage @ DS end of project. Drainage has been re-routed. 19 MONTHS LATER-Elton Cr. DS of Freedom 7 Br.-Derrick-June. 9, 2009

From lower end looking US @ lush bank vegetation. Live Siltation & transplanted willow bushes on bank form a vegetated “grid” (woody veg. both parallel & perpendicular to direction of high flow). 19 MONTHS LATER-Elton Cr. DS of Freedom 7 Br.-Derrick-June. 9, 2009

This talk is over, time to relax Double trouble at rest
