Reproduction  Reproduction-process by which living organisms produce others of their own kind.  It’s essential to all living things.  Without reproduction we would become extinct.  Human life results from the union of two cells.  One from the male and one from the female.

Reproductive System  Reproductive system-body organs and structures that make it possible to produce young.

Male Reproductive System  The function of the male reproductive system is to produce sperm and transmit them to the females reproductive system.  Sperm-the male reproductive cells, first produced during puberty. (age 12-15)

Male Reproductive System  Parts of the male reproductive system  Testes-pair of glands that produce sperm, also where reproduction starts.  Epididymis-network of tubes behind the testes that stores sperm.  Semen-mixture of sperm and fluids helping sperm move along the female reproductive system. Produced in the prostrate gland.

Male Reproductive System  Urethra-tube running from bladder through the penis carrying both urine and sperm out of the body.  Ejaculation-muscular contraction of the penis that moves sperm out of the males body.

Male Health Concerns  Inguinal hernia-if a man strains his abdominal muscles he can weaken the muscles that hold his intestines in place.  Causes intestine to push through the abdominal muscles.  May notice a bulge in the groin area.  Only surgery can repair a hernia.

Male Health Concerns  Testicular Cancer  Most common form of cancer in males ages 15-35.  Symptoms include lump, pain or tenderness.  Can be cured if caught early.

Male Health Concerns  Prostate cancer  Second most common form of cancer in men.  Usually affects men over the age of 55.

Male Health Concerns  Sterility-inability to produce enough healthy sperm to fertilize a female reproductive cell.  Factors that lead to sterility include  Radiation  Lead  X-rays  Men who smoke

Care  Perform a self-exam each month.  Take a shower daily to keep clean, especially after activity.  Always wear protective gear when playing contact sports.  Have regular check ups.
