5 Leonard Leakey Hofstadter, Ph.D. Leonard is an Experimental physicist with an IQ of 173 and he received his Ph.D. when he was 24 years old. He shares an apartment with colleague and friend Sheldon Cooper. So far, through the series the writers have toyed with a romance between him and neighbor Penny. 6 Sheldon Cooper, Ph.D. Originally from East Texas, Sheldon was a child prodigy, starting college at the age of eleven (right after completing the fifth grade) and graduate school at fourteen. When he was a kid, he conducted experiments involving the height of stairs and deduced that if a step on a staircase is as little as 2 millimeters off, most people will trip (this resulted in his father breaking his clavicle). When Sheldon was twelve years old, he wanted a titanium centrifuge to separate radioactive isotopes. As a kid, he built a CAT scanner, a so-called "Death Ray", and a robotic arm made using his sister's Easy Bake Oven, which he modified. According to his mother, he also attempted to build a nuclear reactor at thirteen years old in order to provide free electricity for his town; however this failed after a government agent informed him that it was illegal to store yellowcake uranium in a shed. At age fourteen, he dabbled in lasers, resulting in his being sent to boarding school after the government took his laser away and hushed the college professor who witnessed the experiment. He was the youngest person to receive the Stevenson Award six months after his fourteenth birthday. Sheldon worked as a visiting professor in Germany at age fifteen, and received his first PhD at sixteen years old, working on twistor theory. He then spent four years on his (second) dissertation, and has held his current job for three-and-a-half years. 8 Howard Wolowitz, M.Eng. He works as an engineer and lives with his mother; they are both Jewish. Howard, unlike Sheldon, Leonard, and Raj, does not have a Ph.D. However, he likes pointing out that he has a master's degree in Engineering (from MIT). 11 The Friendship Algorithm January 19, 2009 January 19, 2009 Socially awkward, Sheldon develops a scientific procedure for making friends. He needs to use an open science grid computer that is in Barry Kripke's office, but Leonard tells Sheldon that only Barry's friends can use it. After repeated rebuffs from Kripke, Sheldon finds a children's book in the bookstore (where he is hurried out by Leonard who finds him innocently chatting to a little girl in view of a security camera) about how to make friends. He designs a flowchart for accomplishing this task. He goes rock climbing with Kripke but faints halfway up when he sees how far he has come. Sheldon invites him over to his apartment, much to the disgust of everyone else. Raj is informed he is being replaced by Kripke as five friends would be too many to handle. Barry then tells Sheldon there is a sign-up sheet for the computer and Barry has no control over it. Sheldon then dismisses Barry as his friend and goes back to his other four friends: Leonard, Howard, Raj, and Penny. Socially awkward, Sheldon develops a scientific procedure for making friends.
