Overview of UK Nuclear Physics Paul Nolan
2
Structure of how nuclear physics is organised in the UK Nuclear Physics funding in the UK Numbers to indicate: the size of the community their locations physics topics on which they work Outline
3
Research coverage: Research that is funded by the STFC Nuclear Physics grants panel Areas are: Nuclear Structure Nuclear Astrophysics Hadron Physics Strongly interacting matter Theory STFC also funds Instrumentation, Applications and Outreach Outline
4
No accelerator facilities in the UK Majority of work takes place within National and International collaborations Expertise in developing and providing instrumentation for international collaborations Funding mechanisms (and bodies) have changed a number of times in last 25 years, move to STFC in 2008 Basic UK facts
5
There are 50 academic/faculty staff carrying out nuclear physics research Number has been stable for a few years All (except 3 at STFC Daresbury) are University funded Rutherford (5 year) Fellowships are available from STFC on a competitive basis There are 60 Research and Professional staff supporting the academic staff There are 90 Research students working with the academic staff Size of UK Community
