3. About HPP SA Humana People to People in South Africa is a national NGO, a member of the international federation Humana People to People, who work in 42 countries around the world. Humana People to People in South Africa was started in 1995 with the goal to respond to the needs of under-privileged people Today the organization administers four development projects: - Child Aid - Hope Humana - Total Control of the Epidemic - Humana Youth in Action It is active in five provinces: Gauteng, Limpopo, Mpumalanga, Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal

5. The Idea of TCE The idea of the program is to empower the individual to take a defined stand against HIV&AIDS & TB in their lives through repeated mobilisation, information dissemination, education and basic counselling.

6. The TCE Concept In an area with 100.000 people Humana People to People recruits, trains and deploys 50 local people as Field Officers. For 3 years each Field Officers systematically move from House to House and reaching individual at a person to person level with information, education, mobilisation and basic counselling.

7. Areas of Support Collaboration with Local Govt Municipalities Socio-economic development. Provides political and social leadership through local leaders Dept of Education -Promotion of the School Program and Schools Clubs. Approves and qualifies the Field Officer as an Educator course. Other Promotion and Support of the work of other NPO, CBO and local business who fund local programs Dept of Social Development Promotion of govt grants and social support systems with reference to people on ARVT, orphans etc - Support and promotion of the HBC program in the District. Dept of Health Provides technical and policy direction in the implementation of TCE. - Promotion of district programs HCT, PMTCT, ARVT, TB etc. Approves and qualifies the Field Officer as Counselor Education.

8. Areas of Support The Multi Sectoral Approach Support Groups Establishes and networks with local CBO/NGO to ensure there are structures to support people who tested positive. HBC -Refers people for HBC, and Field Officers work as eyes for the HBC organization in the Community. Orphans Works with NGOs and Dept of Social Welfare to identify and support orphans IPT, TB Works with CBO and Dept of Health to promote and support the prevention of TB. HCT Works with local NGOs and the Dept of Health to provide HCT services

11. Way Forward Community Health Care HPP SA offers to be a strong partner in the roll out & re- engineering of the Community Health Worker programme in MP. HPP SA believes that the structures of TCE at the community mobilisation level fit well to be used as a framework for the revised CHW programme. HPP SA suggests a partnership with government, where we recruit, train, lead and monitor community health workers into a strong provincial programme to strengthen people’s basic health. We can extend the work of Field Officers to address broader public health issues such as child and maternal health and life style diseases.
