Feb.16,2008MPFI Meeting at IIT Madras3 History A One-day Workshop on Rural Mobile Banking Technology, sponsored by IDRBT, Hyderabad and TENET, IIT – Madras was held on December 19, 2006 at IIT – Madras wherein several Technology Providers took part and various technology issues were discussed (list enclosed).list enclosed The Governing Council of IDRBT in its meeting held on July 02, 2007, advised IDRBT to take leading part in evolving standards for Mobile Payments in India (Memorandum by Circulation).Memorandum by Circulation Subsequently, a brain storming meeting between the teams of IDRBT and TENET was held on July 26, 2007 at IIT-Madras, which has shaped the formation of the “Mobile Payment Forum of India”.

Feb.16,2008MPFI Meeting at IIT Madras4 Objectives of MPFI To enable mobile payments in India with secure transactions at low cost through robust technology. To provide a forum to share and discuss the learnings, opportunities, developments and constraints (including regulatory issues) of enabling mobile payments in India and for its sustained growth. To identify the entities involved and advise the enablers for implementing and running mobile payment systems reliably. To create awareness among enablers and users through educational workshops, conferences, seminars, certification programmes, quiz programmes etc. To guide banks, telecom organizations, support service providers, financial institutions, government and others for providing mobile payments in an inter-operable and heterogeneous environment including the rural masses.

Feb.16,2008MPFI Meeting at IIT Madras5 To conduct research surveys and support research and collaborative development activities related to mobile payments. To organize awareness camps, exposure visits within and outside India for knowledge enrichment and for adoption of the state-of-the-art technologies in mobile payments area. To establish and maintain data bank and provide centralized information services pertaining to all issues and developments of mobile payments through publications in the Society’s website, newsletters, magazines, journals, reports, manuals, books etc. to be initiated by the Society. To promote innovative technologies and entrepreneurial developments for appropriate softwares, hardware, applications, testing tools etc. identified from time to time. To award prizes and medals annually in various areas of mobile payments through transparent evaluation process in accordance with the rules to be framed from time to time. Objectives contd..

To develop standards in consultation with Regulatory and Govt. bodies and to support their periodic version updates for uniformity and legal sanctity of adoption in domestic and global mobile payment services. To establish, acquire, maintain and manage Society facilities and common sharable infrastructure such as offices, library, computer centers, training facilities at various locations etc. To establish and maintain additional centers of the Society at various locations as deemed to be necessary. To engage in any other lawful activities as the Society may deem fit or incidental for the furtherance and attainment of its objectives. Categories of Institutional Membership: The membership of the Society is available to members of Banks Telecom Operators Software and Hardware Technology Providers related to mobile payments Regulators, Government and Govt. Agencies Academic and Research Institutions etc. involved in the development of mobile payments in India. Rules regarding the Membership : Payment of the appropriate Society membership fees. Except Founding / Donor Members, all others have to be approved by the Executive Committee for membership in the society. The membership is valid for 1 fiscal year and the amount of membership fee is decided by the EC.

Application Form for Institutional Membership has been sent to the Banks, Telecom Operators, Software and Hardware Technology Providers related to mobile payments, Regulators and Government Agencies involved in the development of mobile payments in India. Feb.16,2008MPFI Meeting at IIT Madras13 An amount of Rs.10,000/- has been collected as Membership Fees from the Institutions who have been registered as MPFI Members. Bank Account: The amount is being deposited in “IDRBT-MPFI” Account, (A/c. No. 426010100064451) Axis Bank Limited, Humayun Nagar Branch, Hyderabad. It is currently being operated jointly by the Executive Secretary of MPFI and the Manager (HR), IDRBT. It is being audited by IDRBT.
