Inform/Explain Informational Essay: This is the “old school” report of information Explanatory Essay: Personal Essay (I feel/I believe) Ex: All About Martin Luther King Ex: Martin Luther King is my hero because…

Opinion/Persuade Expository Essay: Opinion (state your beliefs and prove it. Persuasive Essay: State your belief, prove it, and get the reader to do something. Ex: Martin Luther King is the most influential civil rights activist. Ex: Visit the Martin Luther King Memorial this summer.

Recipe Card: Research Paper Introduce a topic clearly (hook/lead, background info) Group related information in paragraphs and sections Create an organizational structure (body paragraphs) Link ideas within categories of information using words and phrases (ex: another, for example, also, because, etc.) Provide a concluding statement or section Elaborate consistently across the entire piece Develop the topic with facts, definitions, concrete details, quotations, or other information about or explain the topic Communicates why this topic matters/ has interest to them/ others/ the outside world Uses grade appropriate capitalization, punctuation, and spelling
