1 Measurement Elapsed Time 60 seconds = 1 minute 60 minutes = 1 hour
24 hours = day 7 days = week About 52 weeks = 1 year 365 days = year 366 days = leap year

2 There are 2 systems we use to measure temperature.
1. Fahrenheit- the unit used to measure temperature in the customary system. 2. Celsius – the unit used to measure temperature in the metric system.

3 Celsius Fahrenheit Water Boils at 212 degrees F
Room temperature is 75 degrees F Water Freezes at 32 degrees F Body Temperature is 98.6 degrees F Celsius Water Boils at 100 degrees C Room temperature is 20 degree C Water Freezes at 0 degrees C Body Temperature is 37 degrees C

4 Customary Measurement
Length 12 inches = 1 foot 3 feet = 1 yard 5,280 feet = 1 mile Do you know?? 36 _______ inches = 1 yard 1,760 _______ yards = 1 mile

5 16 ounces (oz.) = 1 pound (lb.)
Customary Weight 16 ounces (oz.) = 1 pound (lb.) 2,000 pounds (lbs.) = 1 ton (T) Examples: 1 ounce – dog biscuit 1 pound – can of corn 1 ton - truck

6 Customary Measurement CAPACITY
Capacity – the maximum amount that can be contained by an object. 1 gallon = 4 quarts 1 quart = 2 pints 1 pint = 2 cups 1 cup = 8 fl. Ounces Ounce (fl. Oz.) Cup (c) Pint (pt) Quart (qt) Gallon (gal) 16 So…. How many cups are in a gallon?

7 Relationships Between Units of Measure
What is the relationship between 1 week and 1 year? Thought process: I know there are 52 weeks in a year, so 1 of them would be 1 out of 52. The answer as a fraction would be 1/52. Let’s Try Some More: What’s the relationship between a cup and a pint? 1 minute and an hour? 1 oz. and a pound? 1/2 1/60 1/16

8 The distance around a figure.
Perimeter The distance around a figure. *Add ALL sides 12 inches = 34 inches 5 inches (12 x 2) + (5 x 2) = 34 inches

9 The number of square units needed to cover a surface.
AREA The number of square units needed to cover a surface. Area = length x width 8 cm. 8 x 3 = 24 square cm. 3 cm.

10 Volume = length x width x height
The measure of the space a solid figure occupies. Volume is measured in cubic units. Volume = length x width x height V = L X W X H 8 x 3 x 4 = 96 cubic inches 8 in. 3 in. 4 in.

11 Metric Units for Length
Kilometer (km) – a little smaller than a mile Meter (m) – about the width of a door Centimeter (cm) – about the width of a large paperclip Millimeter (mm) – about the thickness of a dime 1,000 mm = 1 m 100 cm = 1 m 10 decimeters (dm) = 1 m 1 kilometer (km) = 1,000 m

12 Metric Units for Mass 1,000 mg = 1 g 1,000 g = 1 kg
Milligram (mg) = takes 1,000 mg to make a gram Gram ( g) = about one paperclip Kilogram (kg) = about the mass of a book 1,000 mg = 1 g 1,000 g = 1 kg

13 Metric Units of Capacity & Volume
Milliliter (ml) – about the amount in an eye dropper Liter (l) – 2 liter bottler of Coke 1,000 ml = 1 liter 1,000 liters = 1 kiloliter
