3 Session 1: Introduction to the course By the end of this session candidates will be able to: State their personal goals List the course objectives State the course programme Explain where the course fits into cycle training schemes State the purpose of the Bikeability Scotland Trainers Guide, Prompt Cards and Cyclist Guide. Refer to Cyclecraft by JohnFranklin for useful reference material.

4 Session 2: Safety Checks By the end of this session clients will be able to: Explain how to carry out a BCHE check Safely fit a helmet Recognise faults in a bike Make minor adjustments to make the bike safe to use Translate Level 1, Session 1 into practice Identify means of obtaining additional bike maintenance training if desired. 44

5 Session 3: Warm-up & Practical Assessment of the group By the end of this session clients will be able to: Describe how to conduct a warm-up session Assess the level of ability of the group Recognise balance & control skills State where the most effective teaching position is for this activity. 55

6 Session 4: Braking By the end of this session clients will be able to: State which hand operates which brake Describe which is the most effective brake Brake safely and effectively in control Deliver a session on braking Describe the braking requirements of the “ Scottish Cycle Training Scheme”. 66

7 Session 5: Risk Assessment By the end of this session clients will be able to: Recognise when a session is unsafe Conduct a risk assessment Explain the term “dynamic risk assessment” State what has made a session safe Review a session in terms of safety Deal with emergencies, injuries and signs of illness. 77

12 Session 9: Core manoeuvres By the end of this session clients will be able to: Recall the core cycle training manoeuvres State the components of each manoeuvre Demonstrate each manoeuvre Identify different methods of correcting errors Explain the importance of group management. 12

13 Session 10: Session Preparation By the end of this session clients will be able to: State the manoeuvre they will teach Explain the key points for session planning Identify the main safety considerations relating to a cycle training session Conduct BCHE checks. 13

14 Session 11: Practical on-road riding By the end of this session clients will be able to: Describe the process of snaking Manage a group on-road Negotiate a range of hazards with a group Demonstrate safe road positioning as both front and rear instructor Demonstrate an overall perception of hazards and developing situations. 14

15 Session 12: Cycle Accessories & Clothing By the end of this session clients will recognise: How appropriate clothing can increase a cyclist’s conspicuity The range of fluorescent and reflective clothing that is available. Clothing that is inappropriate for cycling The importance of fitting a helmet correctly (if worn) Pros and cons of helmet wearing That high visibility clothing can change the parameters of driving behaviour in the presence of a cycling course. 15

16 Session 13 Basic roadside repairs By the end of this session clients will be able to: Conduct basic roadside repairs State what to carry in a toolkit. 16

19 Session 15: Session Delivery By the end of this session clients will be able to: Conduct a BCHE check Prepare, conduct and evaluate a session Compare standard to that required by the “Scottish Cycle Training Scheme” Close a session and review it with candidates. 19

20 Session 16: The Competent Trainer By the end of this session clients will be able to: Describe the role of the Cycle Trainer State the range of responsibilities of the Cycle Trainer Recognise what he /she needs to do to become a role model Cycle Trainer. 20

21 Session 17: The Highway Code By the end of this session clients will be able to: Identify and interpret a range of traffic signs Discuss child focussed parts of the highway code Identify personal development issues. 21

22 Session 18 Riding Strategy By the end of this session clients will be able to: Negotiate more complex junctions Explain decisions made whilst negotiating hazards Demonstrate an understanding of safe riding strategy Ride in pairs, one rider providing a commentary to the other. 22

23 Session 19a: Bike cleaning & Lubrication By the end of this session clients will be able to describe: How to clean a bike effectively How to avoid damaging a bike whilst cleaning it Which parts of a bike require regular lubrication. 23

24 Session 19b: Overview of the Cycle Training Assistant course By the end of this session clients will be able to describe: The content of the Cycle Training Assistant course The resources available to support delivery of the CTA course. 24

25 Session 19c Preparation for Day 4 By the end of this session clients will have: Selected an advanced manoeuvre topic Given consideration to the requirements to present the information creatively to colleagues. 25

26 Session 20: Bikeability Scotland Level 2 By the end of his session clients will be able to: Describe the scheme in outline Relate the course contents to the requirements of Bikeability Scotland Level 2 Identify the Level 2 resources Explain how training will be implemented. 26
