Satisfactory Completion of Dental Foundation Training (DFT) Pilot Programme 2015/16 Recommended Minimum Requirements September 2015

Purpose of Recommended Minimum Requirements Recommended minimum requirements are designed to ensure that the purpose of Foundation Training as set out in the DF Curriculum and Dental Performers’ List Regulations is met Individual LETBs/Deaneries may make some or all requirements mandatory at their discretion. RCP Panels will take account of local LETB/Deanery guidance, extenuating circumstances and/or the overall performance of a FD in making an Outcome recommendation The requirements should not be seen as a maximum.

Practice induction to be completed within first two weeks Induction checklist in e-portfolio to be used Record of pre-Foundation clinical activity also to be completed Induction

FD and ES reports to be completed by end of Month 2 and meetings with TPD held ESR information available to the Panels for information Early Stage Review (ESR)

Two required - completed within first two to four weeks Templates in e-portfolio 1.New patient examination (to review basic communication skills) 2. Simple restoration (to review basic clinical skills) Concerns to be discussed with TPD Direct Observation of Procedural Skills (DOPS)

Completed in Month 3 Template in e-portfolio 10 records reviewed by FD Minimum 3 of the 10 records reviewed by ES Patient Record Review

Eighteen completed by end of Month 9 Minimum of 8 completed by Interim RCP Minimum of 18 completed by Final RCP Stage 1 All 11 major clinical competencies should be assessed at least once by the ES or another dentist ADEPTs with scores less than 3 in ‘treatment planning’ and/or ‘procedural knowledge’ and/or ‘technical ability’ must be repeated until score of 3 or above is achieved At least 1 ADEPT should be carried out by an assessor (TPD or ES) other than the FD’s ES(s) ADEPTs

Ten completed by end of Month 9 Minimum of 3 completed by Interim RCP Stage One CbD to be formally presented and assessed at a Study Day Case-based Discussions (CbDs)

All Logs must be completed, action plans generated and identified learning needs addressed Minimum of eight to be completed by end of Month 2 Minimum of one to be completed each month between Months 3 and 12 Log entries should be linked to events which lead to a learning need Action plans should be created (and followed through) as part of each entry Additional entries (when appropriate) are to be encouraged to support reflective practise FDs will not be reminded to complete a Log each week/month. Meeting the requirements set out above is the responsibility of the FD – monitored and encouraged by their ES! Reflective Clinical Log

Activity should demonstrate experience of a broad range of treatments and patient types relevant to NHS General Dental Practice It is important that you record completed Units of Dental Activity (UDAs). Completion of in the region of 1875 UDAs will help you to prepare for contracted activity levels after Foundation Training Record to be completed monthly. Each record will be locked 5 working days after end of each month Complex treatments – recommended activity should include a minimum of: Twelve crowns, inlays, onlays and veneers. (To include at least one of each type, if possible) Three bridges. (To include one conventional and one adhesive bridge, if possible) Twelve acrylic prostheses Two Co-Cr prostheses Eight single-rooted endodontic cases (incisors and/or canines) Four multi-rooted endodontic cases (molars and/or premolars) Two surgical extractions: One undertaken as ADEPT with ES by the end of Month 4 Clinical Activity Record

Completed by end of Month 9 Two audit cycles to be completed Topic and timings to be set by individual LETBs/Deaneries The Record Card Review in Month 3 does NOT count as a clinical audit Clinical Audit

Completed in Month 4 Minimum of 8 submitted forms required per round Please use HEYH specific msf forms and attach in epdp Respondents must include ES(s), FD’s Dental Nurse, Practice Receptionist FDs can use other Scheme FDs to ‘top-up’ if less than 8 respondents in practice FD is responsible for ensuring 8 returns (may need to issue more than 8 feedback forms) Interim RCP Panels can require a second round in Months 8/9 if necessary Multi-Source Feedback (MSF)

Completed in Month 4 Minimum of 20 submitted forms required per round FD is responsible for ensuring 20 returns (may need to issue more than 20 questionnaires to patients) Interim RCP Panels can require a second round in Months 8/9 if necessary Patient Survey Questionnaire (PSQ)

Evidence of training to be submitted by FD by end of Month 9 List of topic areas set out in matrix Evidence required to demonstrate learning will be set by each LETB/Deanery Normally based on matrix options but other methods (e.g. Test of Knowledge) may be used Professionalism and Management & Leadership Domains

Study Day attendance is mandatory Normally 30 Study Days in 12 months period (may be local LETB/Deanery variations) All LETB/Deanery Study Days must be recorded and evaluated reflectively Exceptionally, alternative arrangements may be accepted – subject to prior approval Study Days held after Final RCP recommendation must be attended to demonstrate Satisfactory Completion Study Day Attendance

Participation in Tutorials is mandatory Normally 40 Tutorials in 12 months period (may be local LETB/Deanery variations) All Tutorials required by LETB/Deanery must be recorded and evaluated reflectively Tutorials held after Final RCP recommendation must be attended to demonstrate Satisfactory Completion Educational Supervisor Tutorial Programme

Reporting required in e-portfolio and ESs’ Structured Reports Significant events and complaints should be recorded and analysed on practice documentation or LETB/Deanery template (where available) Reports should be uploaded to e-portfolio by FD and any personally identifiable information removed Any learning needs identified should be recorded in the e- portfolio Panels will take account of the evidence and its relevance in their overall assessment Significant Events and Complaints

Reporting required in e-portfolio and ESs’ Structured Reports Absences of 10 days or more will be reviewed by the LETB/Deanery Panels will take account of the evidence and its relevance in their overall assessment Sickness Absence

FDs are required to upload this information into the e- portfolio monthly following receipt of first BSA report The information is used as part of the assessment of clinical experience during the training period It is reviewed in conjunction with the FD’s own entries in the Clinical Activity Record NHS Business Services Authority (BSA) Data

Both surveys should be completed where available Not all LETBs/Deaneries carry out a local survey Surveys may be compulsory or voluntary as decided by each LETB/Deanery Final page of each survey should be uploaded into e- portfolio to confirm completion National and Local FD Surveys

ES and TPD structured reports to RCP Panels are an integral part of the Satisfactory Completion process Panel reports and recommendations for Outcomes will guide the Postgraduate Dental Dean in Satisfactory Completion decisions RCP Reports

Outcomes are based on the ARCP model Outcome 6 Satisfactorily demonstrated the requirements Certificate to be awarded Outcome 2 Targeted training required (Interim RCP only) Outcome 3 Additional training time required (Final RCP only) During the pilot year take up of additional training time is voluntary and at the discretion of the Postgraduate Dental Dean Full details are in the ‘Blue Guide’ Outcomes
