The Lifeboat station has had many boats since the station has opened: The first lifeboat was called ‘The Good Deliverance’ it was a 30ft pulling and sailing lifeboat with 6 oars and a crew of 9. The cost was £135,7 shillings and 2 pence. It launched 17 times and saved 26 lives. The ‘Good Deliverance’ was launched with the aid of horses. 1870,’Chafyn Grove’ was 32ft pulling and sailing lifeboat with 10 oars and a crew of 13, it’s cost was £248, 7 shillings and 6 pence. Alterations were carried out to accommodate the larger boats and a harness room were created to store tack for 6 horses. The costs were £12, 10 shillings and £21 and 5 shillings. A scale model built in 1872 of this boat is now on display in the station. This lifeboat launched 8 times and saved 28 lives. 1873,A roadway was built to the east of the station to assist launching into Porthcawl creek. The cost of this was £21.00 and 12 shillings CONTENTS

With the co-operation of Porthcawl Urban District Council an open-sided shed alongside Jennings’ Buildings, at the head of the slipway, was obtained to house the lifeboat. The new station opened in May 1965. The new 16ft D class lifeboat for Porthcawl was funded by the Ladies’ Guild of Hereford. It was designed to give rapid response to people using the sea and coastline for recreational purposes. It was launched by trolley down the slipway. The most basic of equipment was supplied, consisting of a pair of oars, an anchor and cable with 3 sets of yellow PVC oilskins for the crew. Training started immediately at Atlantic College, with much enthusiasm being shown from the crew. The lifeboat season ran from 1 st of April until the end of September in daylight hours and the boat was permitted to operate in up to force five weather conditions. The lifeboat proved to be a success and soon began giving assistance and saving lives. CONTENTS

Monday night is cleaning night. All crew members clean their uniform and make sure the boat is clean. During the week the crew members carry out a number of practises and check ups to make sure everything is OK for when they are sent out on a call. On a Monday and a Friday the boat is serviced. They do this to make sure the boat is working and will not brake down during a rescue. Wednesday is training day where the crew practice any techniques they need to use when going out on a rescue. Friday is maintenance night where they check everything is working and is fully functional. CONTENTS

These are some of the first rescues made by the lifeboat crew using the ‘Good Deliverance’: 1861 service to the ‘Mary Jane: The ‘Mary Jane’ was a schooner that went around on the Scarweather sands. Expecting her to break up the crew took to their boarding boats, abandoning the vessel. Porthcawl lifeboat was launched and on the next rising tide floated of the stricken vessel and towed it to the safety of Porthcawl harbour. 1666 – the name of the vessel was unknown. A vessel was sighted in peril again on the, now, notorious Scarweather Sands. The Good Deliverance was launched and made its way to the sea conditions were not allow the lifeboat to get close to the stricken vessel and there were no survivors of get another local.

CONTENTS Porthcawl’s new lifeboat station was officially opened on September 7 th 1996 by Mrs Mary Hastie. With the installation of an Atlantic 21 lifeboat and with the latest 4 wheel drive, hydraulically-driven launching Talus tractor, this involved a half a million pounds investment by the RNLI. The Atlantic 21, Blenwatch, was a temporary lifeboat until we could take the delivery of our Atlantic 75, Giles. It arrived just in time for the opening of the station. 31 years were spent operating the D-class boat. It provided very makeshift facilities in its earlier days and is well respected in its later years. The positive attitude by crew, helpers and committee was the reason for the boats success. It created a happy and professional environment.
