1 FAST LC Freshman Academic Success Track, Learning Community

2 What is it? A new pilot opportunity designed to get students through the General Education Core (certificate) in one year including any developmental education courses. The second year of the program, student’s would be advised into an Associates degree path for transfer. Who is it for? 25 first term students willing to commit to the demands of the cohort. Specifically, students who are a) not sure what they want to do, and b) plan on transferring to a four year institution. In Spring of 2014 there were 454 students that may have qualified (114 AS & 340 AA, not including Pre- Nursing). Why should they do it? A)Clear and simple path to degree completion B)Preparation for successful transfer in both academic and personal development C)To be part of a learning community that implements best practices in retention and completion D)For a possible scholarship Why should we try it? Current best practices suggest that students complete college successfully when they have a STRUCTURED program, FEWER choices, INTENSIVE advising, PEER MENTORING, CIVIC RESPONSIBILITIES, INNOVATIVE instruction, and a strong LEARNING COMMUNITY. When will we try it? Fall of 2015

3 SPECIFIC GOALS Create a model that comprehensively supports student development Implement best practices for student success Create a model that can be replicated with lessons learned

4 Tentative Agreement Must Include: Mandatory Orientation Mandatory Essential Start Continued good academic standing Faculty will report on student progress weekly Entrance & Exit Interview Block scheduling (TBD) Agree to courses selected Agree to services as outlined Commitment to continue What else?
