2 What Does “Being Green” Mean? Looking at natural resource use and trying to find ways to conserve them. Reducing your carbon footprint. Using various everyday methods to help save and protect the environment. Making conscious consumption choices

4 Industry Trends Rising public awareness of sustainability issues is informing their travel decisions. Consumers are not only demanding environmental responsibility from businesses, but also from travel destinations as a whole. Major players in the hospitality industry are already taking the steps to green their operations.

5 Cape & Islands Green Seeks to educate and encourage people in their places of work to engage in better practices which reduce the collective impact on the natural environment. It is a three level incentive program of verification. Cape-wide program supported by local business organizations. Categories: Commitment, Awareness and Education; Solid Waste Minimization; Energy Conservation; Health, Air and Water Quality; Water Conservation; Purchasing; and Transportation.

6 Solid Waste Minimization Institute a Recycling Program Cut back on use of paper Eliminate junk mail Eliminate or limit bottled water consumption

7 Energy Conservation Cape Light Compact energy audit Switch to CFL/LED bulbs Clean lighting fixtures, diffusers Perform preventative maintenance equipment and appliances Institute a computer use program

8 Air Quality, Water Quality & Health Use natural lawn & garden care Use eco-friendly cleaning/laundering products Use low VOC materials

9 Water Conservation Control time/limitations on watering landscaped areas Sweep off outside paved areas Use plants and trees tolerant to local conditions

10 Purchasing Establish an environmentally and socially sustainable purchasing policy Inform suppliers that you would like to buy eco-friendly products when available Talk to suppliers about their packaging
