Project 1: Literacy in a PRU/FE college Context: a PRU offering FE courses; a new appointment for staff development Focus: to embed literacy throughout the college Plan: Literacy triage + one-to-one support for pupils (PGCE students) CPD for teachers Embedding literacy throughout the curriculum: PGCE students to support development of materials and resources Written up as a research paper Learning: To develop a bespoke CPD package with a school Connecting school-based practice with research with impact

Project 2: Vulnerable girls in two schools Context: neighbouring and rival schools in a disadvantaged area; a history of girls vulnerability to exploitation and violence Focus: Building on an established project, to support PGCE students to mentor a group of vulnerable girls and support them through their GCSE year Plan: Group and social activities to build community One-to-one mentoring Academic support with coursework and homework Written up as a research paper Learning: Networking across schools to build links with the local authority Research with impact

Project 3: The Illuminate Young Researchers Project Context: An improving school with new management in a disadvantaged area Focus: Building on an established project, an action research project on the development of cultural capital (for example, widening participation in higher education) Plan: Train 6-9 young people + staff (inc PGCE students) in research methods Support the development of research questions and methodology: a research plan Supervise the research teams to carry out investigation and analysis over a term (PGCE students supervise and support access) Develop the findings into teacher CPD Written up as a research paper Special benefits: pupil voice; the development of self-advocacy skills; direct link with SIP, drawing in SMT; AimHigher/Widening Participation agenda and funding opportunities Learning: All about SIPs Linking PGCE student learning with research

Funding Some projects fall within normal PGCE budgeting and are at no cost to schools Small bits of research/alumni funding can be applied for, leading to potential for more Where a cost is implied, HEI to collaborate with schools on applying for research funding to undertake project as a piece of action research
