2. Journal Assignment = 1 MAJOR GRADE We are reading this book in preparation for our literary criticism research project. Our responsibility for this novel will be to have read and analyzed the novel along with being able to offer an interpretation of what this analysis means. TOPIC: Ultimately, we will create a topic/thesis from this interpretation. This assignment has been designed to make sure we have information that will help us create a topic and have useful information for our literary criticism paper after we are done with the novel.

Ultimately, you will need to think of a thesis that addresses a larger issue found in this author’s work, such as: How did his/her life influence his/her work? What conclusions can we (the reader) draw about the author’s views of ________ (topic to be guided by the nature of the works analyzed), based on a study of the texts? Some examples of topics to write about include (but are not limited to): the author’s view of women the author’s view of racial issues the author’s view of relationships between men and women the author’s view of family the author’s view of freedom the author’s view of society the author’s view of personal responsibility, etc.

To develop your topic, you will select and discuss one or more, but not all, of the following areas to analyze in your paper: themes, symbols, characters, settings, motifs, imagery, diction, or other literary elements. Meaning, how do the above mentioned areas support your topic/thesis?

So…what are we looking for when reading the novel? As you read the novel, you will need to notice what subjects and/or issues are addressed. I would like you to focus on the top four that interest you the most. Example: social class, religion, difference between men and women… You will owe me 4 quotes to support each of these four categories and an explanation of each quote. A literary element must be addressed in the explanation. You must also have a category for theme. You must state theme and have at least four quotes to show theme development with explanations for each quote. We will continue to practice theme development in class with Lord of the Flies.

Journal Entries Middle Column Device - Name the literary/language device (element) Quote from the text Include citation Right Column AIM may be literal or interpretative meaning. Effect may be tone, description of speaker, or effect upon reader depending on passage. Purpose should answer this question: HOW does the DEVICE achieve the effect?

Journal Entry Example: Subject Quote (page #)/DeviceExplanation Society 1.Symbolism “Doubtfully, Ralph laid the small end of the shell against his mouth and blew…More and more them came. Taking their cue from the innocent Johnny, they sat down on the fallen palm trunks and waited. Ralph continued to blow short, penetrating blasts. Piggy moved among the crowd, asking names and frowning to remember them. The children gave him the same simple obedience that they had given to the men with the megaphones” (Golding 17-8). AIM - The first act of the children stranded on the island without adults was to recreate society by providing them with leadership and structure. Ralph calls to the kids and they come as they would for adults – they answer their questions and wait for directions. PURPOSE – The conch sets Ralph and Piggy apart from the others the shell calls forward. It marks them as leaders. EFFECT - The conch symbolizes the society and order it allows them to recreate what they knew.
