27 5 THEMES OF GEOGRAPHY 1. LOCATION Absolute- describes an object's location, relative to Earth. For instance, latitude and longitude coordinates are an example of Absolute Location. Relative location is more general and can be used relative to the surroundings of the object. Relative-where it is in relation to another place. Ex: Riverton is southwest of Salt Lake. Utah is northeast of California and west of Colorado. 2. PLACE A place is an area that is defined by everything in it. All places have features that give them personality and distinguish them from other places. Physical-natural features of earth, such as landforms, bodies of water, temp. Cultural-everything that is involved in the people’s way of life; gov’t, language, religion, customs, beliefs. 3. HUMAN-ENVIRONMENT INTERACTION How humans use and change their environment and the consequences of these changes. 4. MOVEMENT Movement refers to the way people, products, information and ideas move from one place to another. This can be local such as how did you get to school today, or it can be global such as how did humans get to North America? 5. REGIONS How places are alike and different. Ex: political regions, physical characteristics, cultural characteristics, language. Too many words Snoresville.
