What is Matter? -Matter is mass and takes up space -Matter is made of atoms and molecules -Matter is related is related to light and electromagnetic
3
States of Matter -There are five different kinds states of matter Solid has a definite shape and volume. A liquid has a definite volume and takes up the shape of the container. Gas does not have a definite shape or definite volume. Plasma does not has a definite volume neither a definite shape. All the bosons are cooled to a temperature near absolute zero and is in the same quantum state. The hard particles are packed tightly and they vibrate. The particles move freely and has a definite volume. The particles move fast and has more space. The particles are made of electrons and ions. The particles bounce around in gases. The particles bounce up and down the same way to form a giant matter wave. Solid Liquid Gas Plasma Bose Einstein Condensate
4
Examples for State of Matter Solid: Wood,Sand,Ice Liquid: Milk,Syrup,Rain Gas: Steam,Air,Helium
5
Physical and Chemical Properties -Physical Properties: Without changing the substances. -Chemical Properties:Are changes that result in the production of a new substance. -Examples Color, Melting Point,Boiling Point, Density,Smell, Mass, and Volume
6
Physical and Chemical Changes -Physical Change: Occurs when one or more physical properties change. -Chemical Change: Occurs when one or more substances cannot undone physical means. Examples: Baking a cake,Frying an egg,Burning wood,Fireworks, and Melting an ice cube
7
Atom -An atom is the smallest part of matter. -Atoms have protons, neutrons, electrons inside. -Different atoms create molecules.
8
Elements -Elements can be found on the Periodic Table of Elements. Each element has its own box with information. Examples:
9
Compounds - A compound has a make up of two or more atoms/elements. Made by a chemical change. Examples: Salt,Copper,Wood,Plastic, and Aluminium
10
Periodic Table The Periodic Table has the chemical elements. The element has -Atomic # that tells you how many protons or electrons -Element symbol are the abbreviations of the element's name - Element Name - Atomic Mass is the number of protons and neutrons. The Periodic Table is arranged by increasing atomic number. The horizontal lines is called PERIODS The vertical lines are called GROUPS.
11
Substances and Mixtures -Substance: Is made chemically and separate chemically only. -Mixture: Is made of more than one kind of material. Made by physical change.
12
Heterogeneous and Homogeneous -Heterogeneous: Is unevenly mixed Ex: Salad Dressing,Fruit Salad, and Jelly Beans -Homogeneous: Is evenly mixed Ex: Iced Tea, Lemonade, and Salt Water
13
Solutions -Solutions: It is a homogeneous mixture. -Solute is a substance that dissolves in another substance. The solvent is the dissolving. -Examples for Solute:Sugar,Salt -Examples for Solvent:Water,Ethanol,Methanol,
14
Solubility -Solubility is when solid dissolves in water so they can dissociate to give the elementary particles to form.
