3 In 1819, Missouri applied for statehood as a slave state. Opposed because they didn’t want to upset the balance between the slave and free states. Favored because they wanted more slave states than free states in the Senate. NorthSouth

5 The Tallmadge Amendment said that Missouri could join the Union, but only as a free state. Favored because they wanted to stop spread of slavery into the Louisiana Territory. Opposed because they didn’t want the North to have the votes in Congress to end slavery. NorthSouth

14 Kansas-Nebraska Act What really happened? Slavery issue would be decided by the states. Settlers on both sides fought violently for and against slavery. Both sides sent weapons to Kansas. Charles Sumner made fiery speech in Congress and was beaten by his nephew with a cane.
