Fam=most imp social institution family doesn’t have precise meaning. group of people related by marriage, blood, or adoption nuclear fam: 2 or more adult generations of the same fam whose members share economic resources and a common household (rare in the U.S. now)

based on need for labor farm: need more workers, grandma, kids. etc industrial rev: move away from farm, less kids and don’t live with as many adults any more.

patrilineal: descent and inheritance passed through male line of fam matrilineal: “ “ female line of fam Bilateral: passed equally from mom and dad Patriarchy: man in charge Matriarchy: woman in charge Equalitarian: equal b/w man and woman (many in U.S. and Scandinavia like this)

Same race.. not as stong a norm as before since 1980, mixed marriages have quadrupled in the U.S. although still only 5%. Homogamy: marrying someone like yourself heterogamy: marriage b/w people w/ different social characteristics. This is rising because America is becoming more racially and ethnically integrated

Marriage rate goes up and down. Not steady rise. divorce rate also pretty constant with minor ups and downs in certain years. Over half of all marriages result in divorce in the U.S. BUT you have to remember that counts people who have multiple marriages. Causes of Divorce may be because of: Age when married years married nature and quality of relationship

Childless marriages on the rise: 19% of married women don’t have any kids! Dual Employed Cohabitation: living together without being married Same sex partners Single: more people are choosing to stay single Boomerang kids: kids who return to live with their parents after college.
