F AMILY We discussed yesterday what family means, how it affects us, and what sorts of roles families play in our lives (support, steering us in the right path, promoting our success in life etc.) Today we will be discussing some of the definitions of the family by Stats Canada/Census information, and comparing those definitions to others (The Vanier Institute)

F UNCTIONS OF THE F AMILY Complete the chart (the functions of the family from the Vanier Institute can be found on the back of the ‘Definitions of the Family’ handout) Explanation column – explain the function identified Example column - provide an example of the function or more than one if you can think of more Institutions column – provide an institution such as government, religion, business, law or education that supports the family to fulfill that function
