CON 4003 Construction Estimating Prof R. V. Locurcio
2
Famous structures Where does it come from? Types of Steel Shapes Units of Measurement Estimating Connections Problems
6
Fabricated at steel fabrication shop Assembled and erected on site Often design of the connections is left up to fabricator as shop drawings
8
Fabricator submits shop drawings to the structural engineer Usual charge +15% over price of raw steel Add transportation cost from fabricator to site Engineer then will check to make sure the connections are adequate Will either approve or make changes to the drawings
11
A36 carbon steel (most common) A529 carbon steel A440 high strength steel A441 high strength, low alloy steel A588 corrosion-resistant, high strength, low alloy Etc…

WF Beam AS Beam AS Channel Structural Tee WF Beam AS Beam AS Channel Structural Tee Angle Structural Tubing PipePlate Angle Structural Tubing PipePlate
14
W18 x 55 Grade 50 W is the shape of the beam W= wide flange or WF 18 is the depth in inches Depth is the “web” 55 is the weight or number of pounds per LF 50 is 50,000psi
15
Estimate total linear feet Categorize each beam shape Size and weight Each shape beam has a different weight Structural-Steel handbook RS Means Buyer pays for ACTUAL weight
16
structural steel members weight of each. When estimating beams, girders, and columns, it is important to estimate not only the number of structural steel members needed but also the weight of each. Do not round up quantities until the final step
17
Two key types of connections… Bolted Welded Determined by structural engineer Shown in construction docs or Shop drawings Read the drawings Special requirements Welding certification Bolt torque specs

One (1)C12x30 (10ft) Four (4)W12x45 (28.5ft) Six (6)W12x45 (29.583 ft) Two (2) W18x86 (39.33 ft) One (1)W18x175 (39.167 ft) Four (4)15 ft C1 columns (40lb per ft) Two (2)15 ft C2 columns (53 lb per ft)
35
Price from RS Means = 15.51T x $2250/T = $34,897.50 mat. + 50%= $17,448.75 x $273/T = $4234.23 lab. + 25%= $1058.56 x $251/T = $3893.02 equip. Total = $61,532.06
55
1.Fabricated & primed at a steel fabrication shop 2.15% Fabrication charge 3.Pay for shipping to site… depends on location 4.Many shapes 5.Estimation is by weight… lbs or tons 6.Use Means for labor & equipment charges
