The Helmet from Sutton-Hoo and it’s Anglo-Saxon Origins By Francis Elane

The culture’s origins The Anglo Saxons were a culture living in Southern England. They migrated as Scandinavian’s emigrating from their own country. They lived there from approx. 200 BCE to 1100 CE.

The Culture While their culture had many interesting aspects, one of their more major topics would be how they wage war. They were a suitably warrior based society due to their origin from a land known for their ancient warriors (later the Vikings) and the fact that the Roman empire, their enemy, was nearby. It should be said that this helmet is one of war.

The Artifact or Helmet The Helmet that this presentation is about comes from a plot of land in Southern England known as the Sutton-Hoo burial grounds. These grounds are home to a ship burial, multiple artifacts, and at least 18 burial mounds of Anglo-Saxon warriors.

The Helmet (Cont.) The reason this helmet could be perceived as warlike is because of a few points that are easily spotted: The helmet is based off of a Roman Calvary helmet, The depictions on the helmet are of warfare and bloody scenes, and an interesting feature as well: The “dragon” in the center of the helmet, which, due to the fact that the Dragon is a mythical animal of destruction, can be perceived in many warlike ways.

What the Helmet tells us about the culture Now, the helmet is already quite clearly a warlike item, giving the implications of this culture being warlike, as previously mentioned. But in addition, the helmet was found in pieces among many other objects such as gold and other prizes from other countries. This means that this culture was in a complex trading relationship from countries unknown. While this is a technicality, it is true. From this helmet we know know how warlike this society was and how it maintained itself with other countries.
