3 Keeping the West Midlands moving CENTRO WMPTA WMPTA – West Midlands Passenger Transport Authority n 27 Councillors from 7 Districts within the County –Birmingham, Dudley, Sandwell, Walsall, Wolverhampton, Solihull, Coventry n Centro is the Executive body that implements WMPTA policies

4 Keeping the West Midlands moving CENTRO WMPTA Centro Mission Statement “To increase the use of public transport, through partnership, to improve economic, environmental and social well being of the West Midlands.”

5 Keeping the West Midlands moving CENTRO WMPTA What Centro isn’t ! - Not a bus operator - Not a rail operator -Not a metro operator n Delivering public transport policies on behalf of 7 districts who fund Centro through the levy n Partnerships is key to successful delivery

6 Keeping the West Midlands moving CENTRO WMPTA What is Centro’s Smartcard Project ? n 3 key elements : –AMS/HOPS –issue 550,000 free concessionary passes –on-bus/metro ETMs n Current status - budget approved to move to tender stage, OJEC PIN notice has been issued and MVA and LogicaCMG appointed to assist Centro develop the project n Delivery of Smartcard included in tender specification for new West Midlands rail franchise

7 Keeping the West Midlands moving CENTRO WMPTA Key Issues n 550,000 Smartcards to be issued by 31 March 2008 n Collection and verification n Passes initially to be used as ‘flash passes’

8 Keeping the West Midlands moving CENTRO WMPTA On-Bus Equipment n Centro will fund all operator ETM replacement n All buses and metro will be fitted by April 2009 n Partnership with operators vital to success

9 Keeping the West Midlands moving CENTRO WMPTA Future Ticketing n Centro commercial tickets (nNetwork, nBus) to go Smart from April 2009 n Platform available for operators own commercial ticketing

12 Keeping the West Midlands moving CENTRO WMPTA Card Issues n Intend to use Mifare 4k cards n PT does not need full capacity n Anticipate will be 1k available for local authority partners to utilise

13 Keeping the West Midlands moving CENTRO WMPTA Scottish Executive Best Practice n Scottish National Concessions based on Smartcard n Card is issued by local authorities as an ‘entitlement card’ n One side National Concessionary Travel, one side for local authority use

14 Keeping the West Midlands moving CENTRO WMPTA Constraints n Concessionary Travel core function n 31 March 2008 is not movable n Limited Centro knowledge of District aspirations n National Card design may limit possibilities
