Filters keeps students from seeing unsuitable information. –There are downsides to filters. They sometimes keep out good and useful websites that could help with their education. You can also leave the child’s name off of the picture or use their first name only. –As teachers we should teach our students how to use the Internet in an educational and responsible way. It will sometimes deny you from opening sites or emails that may contain a virus. Security Patches Security Patches –Install monthly software updates in addition to the ones associated with your operating system. Firewalls Firewalls –You should not get on the Internet without having a firewall installed onto your computer. A firewall will protect your programs and information from being lost or tampered. Browser security Browser security –Many websites we visit could contain viruses. A way to visit the sites and lower the risk is to disconnect javascript. This will also prevent pop-ups.

Safety on your Computer Emails Emails –You should be careful when opening emails. Sometimes viruses can appear to be an email sent from a friend. Be careful opening emails written in different fonts and colors, many times these contain viruses. Plain text emails are safer and less likely to contain an email. IM’s IM’s –Instant Messaging is just as harmful for your computer as emails and should be treated with as much caution. Internet Scams Internet Scams –Be careful of potential scams. Be wary of email or stories saying you have won something, job offers, and other things to good to be true. Many times these are scams to get you to open it and infect your computer with viruses.
