2 Acceptable use policy: education  Technology in the district is for learning  Different types of technology in our district are:  Computers  Chromebooks  iPads  iPods  Some things you do at home might not be acceptable at school

3 Acceptable use policy: privilege  Use of our school’s technology and access to the Internet is a privilege, not a right  You may not:  Post personal information about yourself on the Internet (last name, phone number, address, etc.)  Repost information about someone without their permission  Log onto a computer with another person’s information  Violate copyright laws or plagiarize works you find on the internet  If you break these rules there will be consequences

4 Acceptable use policy: internet  The school district blocks inappropriate things on the Internet

5 Acceptable use policy: your promise  As a student with access to iPads, computers, Chromebooks, and the Internet, you promise to:  Follow the safety rules.  Tell an adult if anything makes you feel scared, uncomfortable, or confused or if you see anything inappropriate online.  Turn off your monitor until an adult can help you.  Not share your personal information online at school.  Not meet in person with anyone you meet online.  Not use rude or mean language on the Internet  Not respond to any message that is mean or makes you feel scared, uncomfortable, or confused.  Tell a trusted adult if you get those messages.

6 Bullying Defined (by www.stopbullying.gov)by www.stopbullying.gov  Bullying is unwanted, aggressive behavior among school aged children that involves a real or perceived power imbalance. The behavior is repeated, or has the potential to be repeated, over time. Both kids who are bullied and who bully others may have serious, lasting problems. serious, lasting problems

8 Bullying Defined (by www.stopbullying.gov)by www.stopbullying.gov  In order to be considered bullying, the behavior must be aggressive and include:  An Imbalance of Power : Kids who bully use their power— such as physical strength, access to embarrassing information, or popularity—to control or harm others. Power imbalances can change over time and in different situations, even if they involve the same people.  Repetition : Bullying behaviors happen more than once or have the potential to happen more than once.  Bullying includes actions such as making threats, spreading rumors, attacking someone physically or verbally, and excluding someone from a group on purpose.

10 Cyberbullying: if it happens to you  Don’t respond to or forward the messages  Block the person who is cyberbullying  Report the problem to your parents or a trusted adult  Keep evidence of the cyberbullying  Dates  Times  Descriptions of what was sent  Save emails, text messages, etc.

11 Lets get logged in  I will turn on your monitors.  Turn your computer on by pressing the button on the front of the device.  Use Ctrl+Alt+Delete to get to the logon screen  Your Username (Should be) first +last initials and your ID number  Your Password should be you ID number  What happens if I turn your monitors off?

12 Today’s Meet  Open Chrome as your web browser.  Go to www.neilchalmers.comwww.neilchalmers.com  Mouse over Digital Citizenship and select week 2  On the left side is a list of today’s activities. Find Today’s Meet.  Click the link next to Today’s Meet  Check with the person next to you to see that you and s/he are in the right place.  Type your id number as your Nickname.

13 Today’s Meet  You can use this Today’s Meet to type in questions that you may have during class  At the end of class I will be able to look at your questions and provide feed back.

14 Digital Life 101 Take out something to write with and something to write on. You will be taking notes today.

15 Warm Up – Defining Media and Digital Media Media (known as Traditional Media) Digital Media “one-way” media because people don’t interact with one another through these technologies “Two-Way” media because people are talking with one another Ways of mass communication. Usually TV, Radio, and Newspapers Digitized content that can be transmitted over the internet or computer networks.

17 Watch a video  You are going to watch a video about how digital media are a 24/7 part of our culture – that video game consoles and portable devices, such as cell phones, seem to surround us. The media lives of all kids and families are not the same. Some kids are allowed to use more digital media than others, and some kids like these tools more than others. Who you are on online is up to you. How much you use digital media is a choice that you (and your parents) make.  Video Link Video Link
