Originally named Liberty Grove School when it was constructed in the late '30s, the school was later renamed after Henry Vaughn Watkins (1888-1944). Watkins, a Lorman native, was educated in the Jackson Public School District, Millsaps and Ole Miss. He practiced law in Jackson for over 30 years. He became a member of the Board of Trustees for Jackson Public Schools in 1916 and served the Board as president from 1920-1933. He was instrumental in the establishment of the Hinds Junior College at Raymond. Over 75 years later, the school continues to provide a quality education to the local community. My Reflection On April 22, 2014, I went to Watkins Elementary School. I arrived at 12:40 and I met the principal Dr.Josie Blake and her office assistant. Dr.Blake walked me to Mrs.Boles 3rd grade for observation. The class was going over there over homework when I walked in and Mrs.Boles was walking around to see did every student have their homework. I was so amazed that the every student was so responsive and engaged in class. Since I am an education major I was excited to hear the students read out loud altogether as one. The students were preparing there selves for MCT2 next month. Mrs.Boles put the students in groups to go over their packets as well and I got a chance to work with one of the groups. This was an great experience simply because I am an education major and it pushes me to keep going in education as well.
