Bell Quiz

Objectives Simplify expressions using the order of operations.

Order of Operations To simplify an expression means to perform all indicated operations. Simplifying an expression could produce multiple answers without rules concerning the order in which operations are performed. (example from book)

Order of Operations To avoid confusion, mathematicians have agreed to use the order of operations. The order of operations is a set of rules for simplifying expressions. Order of Operations 1.Work inside grouping symbols. () 2.Simplify powers and root 3.Multiply and divide from left to right. 4.Add and subtract from left to right.

Example 1 Simplifying Expressions with Parenthesese Simplify: (10 ∙ 3) + 7 ∙ (5 + 4)

Lesson Practice Simplify: 45 – (2 + 4) ∙ 5 – 3

Example 2 Simplifying Expressions with Exponents Simplify each expression. 4 3 + 9 ÷ 3 – 2 ∙ (3) 2

Lesson Practice Simplify each expression. 9 ∙ 2 3 – 9 ÷ 3

Example 3 Simplifying Expressions with Exponents Simplify each expression. (2 ∙ 3 – 2) 2 2

Lesson Practice Simplify each expression. 15 – 3 2 + 4 ∙ 2 7

Example 4 Comparing Expressions Compare the expressions. Use, or =. (1.5 + 3) ÷ 9 + 3 3 ○ (18 + 8) 2 – 8 ÷ 4

Lesson Practice Compare the expressions. Use, or =. 1 ○ 4 + 3 2 + 65 – 2 + 2 ∙ 4 + 3 ÷ 9

Example 5 Application: Comparing a Crop Circle to a Soccer Field A crop circle in a wheat field has diameter of 100 yards. Its area is 3.14 ∙ (100 / 2) 2 square yards. A World Cup soccer field is 70 yards by 110 yards. Its area is (70 ∙ 110) square yards. How much larger is the crop circle than the soccer field?

Lesson Practice Jonah is making a model of the moon using plastic foam. He uses the formula 4/3 πr 3 to find the volume. The model moon’s radius is 3/2 inches. What is the volume of the model moon? Give the answer in terms of π.
