Background Started in 14 March 1967. The first registration for National Service opened on 28 March 1967. In Singapore, all males of 18 years and above must join the nation service(NS) Excluding males with medical problems are excused.

Enlistment Male Singaporean citizens and permanent residents who registered NRIC at 15 years old are required to register for National Service upon reaching the age of 16½ years. Required to undergo a mandatory medical examination to determine their medical status.

Medically unfit Exemptions are rare and are usually due to disability or serious medical conditions certified by the SAF Medical Board. One instance of rare cases of exemption would be if the enlistment would cause hardship to the enlistee's family, be it financially or otherwise. However, this particular exemption is rarely granted. PES (Physical Employment Status) Graded from PES A to PES F. PES A = Full BMT PES F = Go home. :D

Duration of enlistment 1971~Nov 04: LCP<x = 2years 1971~May 04: CPL>x = 2years6mths June 04~Nov 04: CPL >x = 2years2mths Dec 2004, the full time enlistment for all ranks are now 2 years.

Refusal to serve NS Those who refuse to serve NS face imprisonment for a period of 3 years and a fine of SGD$10,000.

BMT BMT, also known as Basic Military Training, is held at the offshore island of Pulau Tekong. During this 3-month long course, recruits must go through courses including field craft, basic jungle survival, camouflaging, operating their personal weapon and basic marksmanship.
