Mission 5 Mission 5: Mission 5: To successfully find the volumes of pyramids and cones. Vocabulary: Formula: Vocabulary: volume, pyramid, cone Formula: V = A base  H

Pyramid-Cone volume Recall that a cone is a 3 -D figure with a circular base and meets at a point called a vertex. Also recall that a pyramid has a polygonal base and meets at a point called a vertex.

Do you see a pattern? The formula for the volume of both these figures is the same: where A is the area of the base and H is the height of the figure. V= A base  H

Let’s see it! V = A base  H, H = 35. 35 44 Find the volume of a square pyramid with a height of 35 m and base length of 44 m. The base is square A = s 2 = 44 2 = 1936 m 2 V = A base  H =  1936  35 = 22 587 m 3

Your turn! Suppose you are going to the carnival, and you buy a snow cone which has a height of 6 cm. and a volume of 40 cm 3. What’s the radius of the base?

Do you feel the love? Way to go. You got that one right!

Don’t give up! We’re all cheering for you. Click on the math nerd for an explanation.

Here is your Answer... V = 1/3 A base  H 40 = 1/3 (  r 2 ) H 40 = 1/3 (  ) (r) 2 (6) 40 = 2  r 2 6.37 = r 2 2.52 = r
