2 Objective SWBAT identify various three-dimensional figures

3 Section 9.4 “ Introduction to Three-Dimensional Figures”
A POLYHEDRON is a three-dimensional figure whose faces are all polygons.

4 Polyhedrons A solid figure that is bounded by polygons, which are called faces. The segments where the faces meet are edges, and the points where the edges meet are vertices.

5 Prism a polyhedron that has two parallel, congruent bases. The base can be any polygon. The other faces are parallelograms. Rectangular prism Hexagonal prism Prisms are named by the shape of their bases.

6 Pyramid a polyhedron that has one base. The base can be any polygon. The other faces are triangles. Triangular pyramid Rectangular pyramid Pyramids are also named by the shape of their base.

7 “Name that Figure…” Identify the bases and faces of the figure. Then name the figure. There are two octagonal bases. There is one pentagonal base. There are two hexagonal bases. There are eight rectangular faces. There are 5 triangular faces. There are six rectangular faces. The figure is an octagonal prism. The figure is a pentagonal pyramid. The figure is an hexagonal prism.

8 “Name that Figure…” Identify the bases and faces of the figure. Then name the figure. There is one triangular base. There are two triangular bases. There are two square bases. There are three triangular faces. There are three rectangular faces. There are six square faces. The figure is a triangular pyramid. The figure is a triangular prism. The figure is a cube.

9 Other Types of 3-D Figures
Three other types of three-dimensional figures include cylinders, cones, and spheres. These figures are NOT polyhedrons because they are not made of faces that are all polygons.

10 Cylinder a solid that has two parallel, congruent bases that are circles.

11 Cone a solid that has one base that is a circle and a surface that comes to a point called the vertex.

12 Sphere a solid that has a surface made up of all the points that are the same distance from a given center point.

13 “To Be or Not To Be a Polyhedron…”
Classify each figure as a polyhedron or not a polyhedron. Then name the figure. The faces are all polygons, so the figure is a polyhedron. The faces are not all polygons, so the figure is not a polyhedron. There is one square base for each figure. There is one circular base. The figure is made up of a square pyramid and a cube. The figure is a cone.

14 “To Be or Not To Be a Polyhedron…”
Classify each figure as a polyhedron or not a polyhedron. Then name the figure. The faces are all polygons, so the figure is a polyhedron. The faces are not all polygons, so the figure is not a polyhedron. There is one circular base for the top figure and two circular bases for the bottom figure. There is two triangular bases. The figure is a triangular prism. The figure is made up of a cylinder and a cone.

15 Guess Who… Guess what three-dimensional figure is pinned to your back by asking questions with YES or NO answers only. You may only ask one question to each person in the class.

17 A NET is a pattern that can be folded to form a solid object like a prism or a pyramid.
