3 Mission Men Against Breast Cancer (MABC), co-founded by Marc Heyison and Stephen Peck in 1999, is the first and only national non-profit organization designed to...   Provide targeted support services to educate and empower men to be effective caregivers when breast cancer strikes a female loved one   Target and mobilize men to be active participants in the fight to eradicate breast cancer as a life threatening disease

4 Partners In Survival™ National Training Program Funded via PA 03050 The Intervention: Partners in Survival™ (PIS) program is designed to educate, train, and empower the male spouses and partners of women with cancer, and in particular, women with breast cancer; and enhance support and improve quality of survivorship for minority women with breast cancer. Partners in Survival™ National Training Program (PIS) consists of:   90 minute workshop for male caregivers   2-6 hours train-the-trainer program

8 Impact Outcomes: Pre Workshop Results   32.1% of participants scored with a high level depression and 30.8% as with a high level of anxiety   In terms of distress, 25.6% of the respondents scored as being high distress   Overall, these men scored higher on the subscales that show poor problem-solving abilities   Correlations between the components of distress and negative problem-solving skills range from -.33 to -.45 with p<.01   This suggests that those men who are more distressed are more likely to utilize a negative problem orientation. Previous studies show that this type of outcome will have a detrimental effect on the person with cancer

11 Lessons Learned   Personal invitations from health care professionals increase the likelihood that men will participate   Men need to be recruited, not invited, to educational programs with clearly defined missions that are male-centric in nature   Men will actively and enthusiastically participate in educational programs that focus on them making a contribution to the women they love   Men express their own specific concerns and fears when in the company of men who share their commitment to supporting women with cancer
