2 TO WHAT EXTENT DOES GLOBALIZATION SHAPE IDENTITY  Individual Identity-Characteristics that make you distinct from other people.  Collective Identity – Characteristics shared by groups of people.  Think, pair and share :  1. How do you become a member of a collective?  2.How would a collective influence your individual identity?  3. List different factors that express what it means to be Canadian?

3 FACTORS THAT EXPRESS IDENTIY 1. Time: Relationships and experiences help shape our identity as we age. 2. Traditions: A repetitive action that is done for a purpose or has meaning. 3. Attire: The way we present ourselves makes a visible statement about our identity. 4. Relationship to Land: How we interact with our physical surroundings communicates a message about our identity.

4 FACTORS THAT EXPRESS IDENTIY 5. Religion: accepting rules and guidelines of a community of believers. 6. Spirituality: Events and actions that bring about a feeling of something greater than yourself. 7. Ideology: A set of beliefs that gives a picture of a persons worldview. 8. The Arts: human activities, creations, and expressions that are appealing to the senses or emotions and give information about our culture.

6 FACTORS THAT EXPRESS IDENTIY Language: How does language affect identity? a) Language Maintain group Solidarity: Language can be the glue that holds the group together and helps affirm their identity.  Slang: language used by members of a social collective. Ex: gangster, nerds  Jargon: Language used by members of a professional collective. Ex: Doctors, lawyers, techie  National Language: Chinese=Chinatown

7 FACTORS THAT EXPRESS IDENTIY B) Language Reflects our understanding of the world and Society  the way we speak reflects how we see the world we live in.  Ex: Mankind vs. Humanity  Old Lady vs. Girlfriend  C)Language Allows people to express their individual Identity, more truly  The ability to speak influences what parts we can express ourselves to the world.
