Verbs By Daniela Ortega and Estefania Vela

What is a verb? 0 Origin: It comes from the Latin verbum 0 Meaning: The part of speech that expresses existence, action, or occurrence in most languages. Example: talk, eat, are, become, etc. 0 Verbs are composed of a main verb followed by one or more helping verbs. Example: (MV) (MV) I sleep every day. The computer did not arrive on time. Notice: adverbs can be between the helping verb and the main verb (did Not arrive).

Helping verbs 0 In English there are only 23 helping verbs, from the forms of: have, do and be. These verbs can also be used as main verbs; 0 There are also 9 modals, that function as helping verbs: have, do, and be only indicate tense, modals do not. 0 Forms of have: have, has, had. do: do, did, does. be: am, is, are, was, were, been, being 0 Modals: can, could, may, might, must, shall, should, will, would. * ought is also a modal

Main Verbs 0 The main verb of a sentence is the word that would change depending on the tense: 0 Base form – Usually I (write, talk) 0 Past tense – Yesterday I (wrote, talked) 0 Past participle – I have (written, talked) 0 Present participle – I am (writing, talking) 0 If a word does not change when plugged into a sentence, then we do not have a main verb. Example: Today I COULD. Yesterday I COULD. 0 When both the past tense and the past participle forms of a verb end in –ed the verb is regular (jump, jumped) otherwise, the verb is ireegular (read, read)

0 The verb to be is irregular, and has eight forms. 0 Present tense: am, is, are. 0 Past tense: was, were. 0 Past participle: been 0 Present participle: beign 0 Helping verbs combine the various types of verbs in order to creat senences. 0 Some verbs are followed by words known as particles. common combinations include: bring up, call off, give in.
