MRI means Magnetic Resonance Imaging. MRI allows researchers to take pictures of the brain. Radiation is NOT used as part of this technique. Researchers can use the MRI data from many participants to look at which parts of the brain are active during various tasks.

It is important that your child lie as still as possible in the scanner to ensure the best quality images and to minimize the amount of time spent in the scanner. Prior to the scan, he/she can practice by lying still on a mat or a bed at home for 2-5 minutes at a time. You can remind him/her to be “still as a statue”.
5
Your child will have a chance to lie in our practice scanner and become familiar with the sights and sounds of the task. At this point, he/she is encouraged to ask any questions or to share any concerns. Your child will also choose a video to watch on Netflix Kids during the scan. You can ask your child to choose a few favorite shows in advance.
6
Your child will encounter some sounds in the scanner that can seem loud, but that are made softer by our earphones. To help make the sounds more familiar, you can listen to the scanner sounds together at home. You may listen directly from our website: dyslexia.loni.usc.edu dyslexia.loni.usc.edu Or you can request a copy of the scanner sounds: 323-442-7246 or candl@loni.usc.edu
7
Your child will wear in- the-ear earphones for the duration of the scan to reduce the noise and to hear a Netflix show or movie of his/her choice. If your child is uncomfortable wearing earphones, you can practice their use at home prior to the day of the scan.
8
The scanner uses a large magnet to capture images. This means nothing metal can go into the scanner room. Before the scan we will ask your child to empty his or her pockets Before the scan we will ask your child to empty his or her pockets No toysNo toys No cameraNo camera No phoneNo phone No beltNo belt No hair clipsNo hair clips No jewelryNo jewelry

Before the MRI scan, your child will participate in a variety of one-on-one activities and assessments with one of our researchers. Feel free to share this fact with your child. He/she will find some of the activities easy and others will be more challenging. The activities will involve speaking, listening and problem solving. He/she will also provide a saliva sample at the end of testing.

Your child’s pre-scan assessment will last approximately 2 hours. While your child is assessed, we will have forms for you to fill out related to your child’s performance in school, his/her behavior, medical history and a few additional topics. Also, please bring your child’s doctor’s contact information with you (name, phone, fax, etc.).
11
Your child will be assessed outside the scanner for ~2 hours. Scan time is an additional 45 minutes, during which your child can watch Netflix except for 10-15 minutes of playing games. Altogether, expect to be here for approximately 4 hours, including time for preparation, training, and breaks. While you are here, we ask that you wait in our lobby at: 3620 S. McClintock Ave. #A Los Angeles, CA 90089 Please feel free to bring a good book, a game or some work to catch up on.
12
Our assessment scores and scanning results are for research purposes only, and unfortunately we are not able to share theses with you. We will however share your child’s scan with our radiologist. You and your child’s doctor will only be contacted if the radiologist feels it is necessary. After the study, we will mail you a picture of your child’s brain. You can hang it on your refrigerator or show your friends!
