What is the World Café? A simple methodology A powerful metaphor
Based on the work of Juanita Brown, David Isaacs and the World Café Community Like most simple questions, asking what the HPO Café is, opens up a large topic for exploration. Café Conversations are also a provocative metaphor enabling us to see new ways to make a difference in our lives and work. The power of conversation is so invisible and natural that we usually overlook it. For example, consider all the learning and action choices that occur as people move from one conversation to another both inside the organization and outside, with suppliers, customers and others in the larger community. What if we considered all of these conversations as one big dynamic Café, with each of the job functions as a table in a larger network of living conversations, which is the core process for sharing our collective knowledge and shaping our future? Once we become aware of the power of conversation as a key business process, we can use it more effectively for our mutual benefit.
4
Assumptions People already have within them the wisdom and creativity to deal with current challenges. Exploring issues together encourages new ways of thinking and a shift in perspective creates new possibilities.
5
Purpose of the World Café
Generate input, share knowledge, stimulate innovative thinking, explore action possibilities Create a dense web of connections in a short period of time as threads of conversation reveal new patterns
6
Café HPO Purpose Integrate learning from today’s presentations, conversations, and panel discussion Demonstrate the World Café methodology Provide an opportunity to make new connections with other HR professionals and strengthen our existing connections After each round, a host stays, others move to new tables, carrying new ideas and questions to the next conversation The role of the host is to welcome newcomers, share highlights of the prior conversation and invite people to doodle
7
When to Use TWC A limited amount of time (as little as 2 to 3 hours)
The World Café is especially useful when you have: A limited amount of time (as little as 2 to 3 hours) A lot of people (as many as 1200) Questions that matter to the people gathered The intention is to build community, strengthen relationships and engage everyone's unique contribution and voice (even the timid or less verbal ones). You want to access collective intelligence based on discovering patterns of meaning in emergent, unexpected ways that come from the intentional rapid cross-pollination of diverse perspectives and ideas. Questions that matter to the people gathered, that they either frame themselves or that a representative sub-group has helped to shape (at least initially) The intention is to build community, strengthen relationships and engage everyone's unique contribution and voice using both verbal and visual modalities (even the timid or less verbal ones).
